There is an article in the British Daily Mail: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2690058/Queen-Victoria-naughty-Princess-journal-reveals.html

About Queen Victoria as a child. Take a look at the photo of her handwriting at age 12. That would have been done with a quill or dip pen.

Thanks for sharing. Some lovely examples, especially considering she was a 12 year old. Would be a very interesting exhibit I think.

Yes good wasn't it? And no picnic with a quill - it was of course about 1830.

Nevertheless, it's worth having a look at Alfred Fairbanks's Handwriting Manual, and see examples of children's writing (twentieth century) from age nine upwards - some of the work is so good it's breathtaking.

Looks like a steel nib dip pen.

Looks like a steel nib dip pen.

You may well be right on reflection; I think that steel nibs were costly that early, but I suppose cost wasn't a problem - I need to do more reading!

Best wishes

I agree on the steel nibbed dip pen.
