The bag I have been waiting for arrived on Friday.

As you can see the leather was dry and very flat

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3836/14498002869_2319f9c80d_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/o6949H)IMG_7972 (https://flic.kr/p/o6949H) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

I applied half a tin of mink oil and left it to soak in overnight

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2916/14503714967_840a188809_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/o6Dkaa)IMG_7978 (https://flic.kr/p/o6Dkaa) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

I will apply the rest of the tin today and leave it to soak in.
Once the leather is a little more supple I will undo most if not all of the stitching which may have once been brown but is now a dirty red colour.
When the bag is in pieces I can add the new lining and extra pockets and then begin to rebuild.

When I was looking for a suitable bag I trawled an auction site for suitable bags at low prices and I mean low, I selected three and made what I thought were minimal bids just to mark them for my reference.

I referred to this one as bag 2

Bag 2 was a top of the range bag in its day trimmed with leather on the inside as well as the outside

And this is bag 3 I know technically it is not a bag

bag three is a bit of a basket case I am afraid it will be a challenge.

If you have not worked it out I won all three bags

This project is on hold for a few days or at least until the other bag arrives so the client can pick between them.
There is another small problem I now have a one in one out policy on boxes and I have been assured that these count as boxes.
I am not really interested in the briefcase as my days carrying one are done (I think) but I did want to keep the barrister box, (how do I know it is a barristers box.)

All systems go all decisions have been made.

Tiffany is right do enough to make it useable however it must work as a bag.
The original plan was to strip this bag completely and re sew and customise the interior when the bag arrived it looked really good and I decided to just customise the interior.
Today I started to remove the interior dividers which were too small to support the new interior I found that the thread was just snapping in fact all of the thread was useless.

So the bag looks like this now

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2930/14601999480_f3cd49a2a0_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ofk4HJ)IMG_8165_1 (https://flic.kr/p/ofk4HJ) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

The inside will be lined in suede and the pockets will all be made in leather dyed by hand and also lined in suede the new stitching will be red waxed linen thread.

This gives you the opportunity to dye any part you want to dye and reinforce anything that you want to reinforce. It is going to be fabulous, Micheal! I am already enjoying the process vicariously.

MY63

Scrivelry you are right it would be an ideal time to dye any parts the owner wants it to look like an old case (old bag did not look right some how) the brass is to remain tarnished

This is the bottom of the case and it has had the same treatment as the rest of the case washed with saddle soap conditioned with mink oil and finally polished with carnauba wax
The old thread has been cut out and replaced with red waxed linen thread

The inside has also been cleaned and dried and is now ready for its lining

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5588/14665037958_955e7b9563_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/okU9S3)IMG_8231_1 (https://flic.kr/p/okU9S3) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The two pieces of suede that make up the lining have been glued and sewn together it will be fixed in place when the dividers and the rest of the case are sewn together

The inside of these bags were at best utilitarian this bag is getting upgraded

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3835/14874227143_e2effa1b63_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/oEoiw8)IMG_8243 (https://flic.kr/p/oEoiw8) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

This is the inside panel of the front the lock mechanism side the inside area around the lock was a little messy so I glued a piece of card to the panel first and then glued the suede in place.
It was very hot here today and I was using contact adhesive as soon as the suede touched the panel it was stuck fast as you can see it went on well first time.

I am not an expert I have been working with leather since October last year.

I took the medium sized hide I bought for this project a very sharp knife a long and a short ruler.
And after three hours I had this

The first picture shows the two pieces that make up the covers for the dividers they will have the pockets sewn to them they will then be sewn into the base and ends of the case.

Don't worry if it is not clear now things will come together slowly at first, as there is a lot of hand sewing to be done.

Hi Caribbean_skye
Thanks for the kind words I would rather restore an old item than make a new one, that does not mean I would not make a new bag if I was asked to.

Here is a sneak peak at the next stage the dividers hold the whole bag together in this picture you can see the kydex dividers without their leather covers

I'd be interested to know if you do these for your own personal use or if you've ever contemplated selling one?

I've been actively looking for a new brief case and the thought of something custom made within my budget (preferably below $500, but no more than $1000) is particularly intriguing.

I don't want to offend you as it looks like you have a great deal of time invested in these, but I'd love to know if you'd entertain the thought.

In order to have room for the laptop and its case the old dividers have to be replaced with taller ones, these dividers are sewn into the base and sides of the bag to facilitate that I need to transfer the holes from the old divider to the new one.

The reason for using kydex is because it is very strong for its weight however that makes putting holes in it rather difficult

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5591/15308759441_6d07e8c9d9_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pjMoQi)IMG_8680_1 (https://flic.kr/p/pjMoQi) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I have fixed the old divider to the replacement with some thread then using a hammer and punch I have transferred the holes.

I was very careful in transferring marking and punching the holes but when I put everything together they were no where near so I had to make new holes with the awl

This picture may look confusing the red stitching is along the bottom of the bag the bottom of the bag is wrapped around the base of the divider and the stitching goes through all of the layers and fastens it all together

I don't want to bore anyone by repeating pictures, Anyway they would be exactly the same as the previous pictures :)

I have spent the bulk of today finishing off sewing the front in place after that for good measure I sewed the back in place as well.

The back and front are now in place the next step involves the refitting of the closing mechanism and the locking flap, I have left all of the threads long so the are easy to see each joint has been sewn in and will be trimmed and sealed.

The next jobs will be to seal all of the exposed edges with an acrylic edge dye which will then be sanded smooth and coated with beeswax.

Following this the whole bag will be cleaned and given a coat of mink oil then carnauba wax.

I would love to see a picture of your bag if you have one.

I have a watch list just for old leather bags now as well as all of the other stuff I seem to be accumulating :)

I have been unwell recently and have not been able to work on my projects,
I have been reading and watching TV I saw an antique perfume case that held three glass tubes with silver caps so I will be making one of those.

A member of another forum pointed me toward a UK company who make high end bags on looking at their site I found their old trade name and was able to buy this one on line.

Ah - so are you making a small case to hold three Goulet sample vials?:)

And I totally get hoping that being up and about means less time to find interesting things on ebay... we have had an influx here of pewter items to be used in our living history impressions. No idea who ordered those...

Puts hands in pockets, whistles while looking off casually in other directions and tries to appear innocent...

Hi Srivelry

"Ah - so are you making a small case to hold three Goulet sample vials?"

Not yet but if one is required I will. Just send the measurements.

I am going to check my TiVo box for the programme I think it was about 6 inches high with 3 glass cylinders about 1 inch in diameter and it was triangular in shape

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5616/15511783916_dbabe30f2d_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pCHWWh)IMG_8804 (https://flic.kr/p/pCHWWh) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

It does not look triangular from this picture I took three pieces of dowel 21 mm in diameter and fastened them together which I then wrapped in kitchen towel and finally wrapped the wet leather around it.

I plan to keep some special pens in it but this is a prototype for now.

MY63

Here is the inspiration for the case my case will be a little smaller and taller to accommodate three pens

I will switch this to the correct pen cases thread as I think I have just agreed to buy another bag to restore it is another Gladstone type bag pictures will follow as soon as the purchase is confirmed.

Thanks

I am not sure how far to take this one

Option one wax and polish and repair stitching where required

Option two cut out all stitching and re sew wax and polish

Option three cut out the stitching and re sew line in an outrageous material wax and polish.

It is large enough to take a medium size laptop computer and A4 size notebooks but not much more
does anyone have any thoughts

There is a large tear in one side and the original straps are missing, all of the seams are blown and the strengthening card has broken down,
It is larger than I thought more of an overnight bag than a brief case it actually weighs 3 kg on its own.
I think there is a good chance that some of the leather (a lot) may have to be replaced, the lock and closing mechanism are worth much more than I paid for the whole bag.

And just to make matters worse I bought another case yesterday but it is in much better condition (I hope) I have given an assurance that all of these bags are not staying here and will be finding homes at some point it seems that bags fall into the same category as writing slopes and are not a separate collectable.

Thanks

Back to the current project things don't always work out perfectly I had left the handle as one of the final jobs to be done.

There is a hint there yes it is nearly finished in fact I had hoped to finish it today however when I unpicked the stitching on the handle it feel apart.

Vegetable tanned leather can be shaped when wet and will hold the shape when dry it will form to almost any shape eventually it just takes a long time.

I still need to alter the colour to match the outside of bag

These are my final pictures of this project it just needs a final polish and check over before being sent to its owner

The original commission was to take a vintage bag and restore it to useable condition and add pockets for a mac book in a case and an ipad in a case, One of the main concerns was that the stitching would be secure and last.

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3955/15429539508_a3bb69f17b_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pvsqxf)IMG_8877_1 (https://flic.kr/p/pvsqxf) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

With this in mind I decided to remove all of the old stitching and take the bag apart which allowed me to line the whole of the interior in suede.

The original dividers were not high enough so I replaced them with Kydex sheets wrapped in leather.

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3938/15430074890_5ef2889caf_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pvvaFY)IMG_8879_1 (https://flic.kr/p/pvvaFY) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I had left the handle to the end and of course it fell to pieces as soon as I started to remove the thread so I spent most of yesterday carrying out repairs I applied the brown dye last night but the colour looks ok to me.

I think this may be the next bag project my initial thoughts were to keep it simple and just clean it and repair the stitching and return it to auction

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5612/14962671224_ed7600149e_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/oNcAS5)IMG_8839 (https://flic.kr/p/oNcAS5) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I have tested the thread in various areas and it is worn out and snaps easily so I have decided to replace all of the thread.
The next decision is the interior either leave it alone or line it in suede or leather.

I have seen the same bags with a buy it now price of £150 they have been polished (and ruined in my opinion) to a gloss finish I would like the finished item to be well below that figure

If anyone has any thoughts I would love to hear them

Michael

When looking for a universal measurement system to replace those pesky inches or cm s, In the UK we often compare things to the size of a double decker bus or a football pitch now not everyone will have one of these handy for comparison so I settled on the trusty iPad.

The handle is in a mess most of the leather is missing from the top of the closing mechanism and the interior is shot so is the stitching.
All it needs is a new interior new thread and some new leather but other than that it is fine

i visited my supplier today and took the little bag with me they advised me not to take the bag apart as it will be very difficult to sew it back together so for now I have smothered it in mink oil to feed the leather and soften it.

I have turned my attention back to the small pendragon bag yes there is a large pendragon bag in black but I will come back to that later, whilst at the supplier I was shown some fantastic red suede so I splashed out on a piece large enough to line the smaller bag.
The gusset piece is thinner than the main body leather and is in really bad condition so much so I put my finger through it yesterday so it will require replacement.

I am taking the same approach with bags as I do with writing slopes in doing what is necessary to make them usable not as new or artificially shinny the outside will look like a bag in good condition, the inside on the other hand I want to make my mark it is going to be red suede and the stitching will be red as my supply of ritza 25 has arrived.
This bag is around 50 years old and I expect it to last for at least another 50 years

I have resisted the urge to clean all of the patina from this case or to polish it to a gloss finish.

The straps are in good condition so I have simply sewn them back in place.

I like brass shinny but I have left this lock as it was I will be making a replacement key for it.

There is still a lot of sewing to do on this case and it may be a few weeks before it is completed

Another Gladstone bag arrived very early this morning it is a middle size the small one in the previous post is 12 inches long x 4 inches wide the newest one is 15 inches long x 8 inches wide and the largest is 24 inches long x 10 inches wide which I may not have shared as yet.

the new bag is in a sorry state as you can see

At some point the bag has been dyed black there are some areas which have perished and may have to be replaced rather than patched but I wont know until I start cleaning the leather.

The inside of the bag has had a replacement lining fitted with a hole torn in it to allow access to these fitted pockets

At last I have found a colour for the replacement sides and base it looks almost the same as the front and back, the dye has dried and has had a coat of wax.
I have started to stick the back panel and front flap to the sides and base doing a couple of cm's at a time as you can see from the picture below I have not finished gluing it together

This is a picture of the modern version of this case with the shoulder strap and I can't decide wether to fit one or not it would make the case more useful but would add more work.

http://www.swaineadeneybrigg.com/store/papworth/computer-cases/papworth-computer-case-76

My case was made by a company who became part of Swaine Aideny Brigg in the 1970 s the prices are not from the 70s though.

Wow!!! Did I read the price of that bag right!!!???

I think if you want to sell it, try to add a strap. Is it something you can add at the end of the process? To provide you time to see if you want to take the strap project on?

MY63
February 14th, 2015, 11:09 PM
Ha ha yes you did read the price correctly but in my defence I showed the cheaper machine sewn version

http://www.swaineadeneybrigg.com/store/swaine-adeney/document-cases/paternoster

This is the hand sewn one it is only £500 more if you bought a bag from Harrods or some other big brands chances are this company made it.
I am unsure how fitting the strap will effect the side gusset of the bag I think they may have reinforced their gusset to accommodate the strap. Once I fit it there is no going back and if it does not work the whole thing is scrap!
Thanks for responding it helps to see another point of view

If the strap can potential goof up the bag.....then skip it. The bag is not worth the risk. Maybe you could make the bag have a padded compartment for an iPad? Or maybe Velcro straps in another compartment to hold cords or headphones? Something to make up for a strap, entice someone to look beyond the strap and buy it?

I agree but the price was in £ not $ it is $3849 in U S dollars hard to believe I know.
The materials would cost about £350 and it would take me about 40 hours to make one :) so if anyone wants one please let me know ;)

My restoration project will be priced a lot lower we can talk about prices here so I think it will be around $310so less than 10% of the cost of a new one.

I think your restored bag is much handsomer than the new ones. Have you decided whether or not to add a shoulder strap?

MY63
February 15th, 2015, 08:08 AM
Thanks Reprieve
I cant decide whether to add a strap or not it is not difficult to do, although the colour match is a bit tricky. I have a piece of leather to make it with but I don't have any brass fittings, they should be easy enough to get hold of.
The difficulty is fitting the strap to the bag when I remade the gusset piece I used a light weight leather as a like for like replacement.

Having referred to Al Stolmans book one of case making this would be my preferred option

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7377/16350506978_b28cc5b26e_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/qUQC5J)IMG_9503 (https://flic.kr/p/qUQC5J) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Although another option would be to use the bar that the handle is fixed to and bolt or rivet some fixing points to those

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3942/14963395453_ce3ef94d51_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/oNgj9M)Pendragon document case (https://flic.kr/p/oNgj9M) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Unfortunately the inside of the lid is now covered in suede so removing the old rivets will be tricky but not impossible

I would be interested to hear what you think

I think the side attachment would be more elegant, but, like you say, it would put stress on the gusset. If the case were carrying a small laptop and papers, or a couple of books, would the weight that would be placed on the strap be too much for the gussets to bear?

If you were to use the top bar, perhaps you could bolt some sort of brass rings on there that would allow a strap to be attached and removed easily. Though I wonder if that would make the "lines" of the case look less elegant?

Or you could always leave it as it is. It's got a wonderfully clean, classic look. I'm only leaning toward adding a shoulder strap because that's how I would carry that bag most of the time and I really want to buy it from you. Badly. :)

The shoulder strap components so far two buckles and two brass rectangles instead of "D" rings if I can find a pair of snap fasteners they could be added and 50 inches of leather

How do you make a key? Do you know how to cast brass? I want to cast brass...

MY63
February 17th, 2015, 01:58 PM
Once you understand how these old locks work then it is a pretty straight forward process the picture below is from a writing slope but the inside of the lock is very similar

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8311/7970380050_d8707f7252_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/d9jhiG)key 3 (https://flic.kr/p/d9jhiG) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I have a selection of old keys that I bought some time ago to use as blanks,
The first step is to measure the outside diameter of the pin inside the lock and the inside diameter of the key hole, then the inside space between the front and back panels.
Once you have these you can find the correct blank. If you can open the lock it is a simple case of filing the blank until it fits.
The key needs to fit into the lever and move it from one side to the other compressing the spring which pushes the lever into place.
I was not able to remove the lock so I had to guess the shape of the key and used trial and error.
Vertolive
I have never cast brass before or anything else for that matter but I was a metal worker after leaving school 35 years ago and would be happy to help you, What do you want to cast?

I hope this helps

School holidays have interrupted me a little this week but I have managed to think about the strap I have made a detail groove which I may sew later

The ends of the strap will be folded over riveted and sewn in place the ends can be cut straight or at an angle or maybe a little fancier

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7437/16582466672_463a7ce453_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rgktBN)IMG_9512 (https://flic.kr/p/rgktBN) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I have found some trigger hooks that look similar to the ones used on the newer version of this case

http://www.abbeyengland.com/Store/tabid/77/CategoryID/31/Category2ID/184/List/1/Level/2/ProductID/68655/language/en-GB/Default.aspx

In fact I am pretty certain that this is the supplier who provides brass ware to the maker. they should be here by the middle of next week.
I am making a wooden template of the strap end so I can replicate the same design on all of the strap ends.

Rather than using the square brass rings I bought last week I have ordered some brass "D" rings I will check with the new owner as there is now some more new brass on the strap I wont age it.

This is the actual strap, I have made a good overlap to give lots of room for stitching but also room for rivets if they are required as a back up.

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8599/16573717396_8a0f600a55_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rfyCLd)IMG_9523 (https://flic.kr/p/rfyCLd) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

There are still options to consider with the strap rather than sewing the ends I could add buckles with adjustment at each end to hold the trigger hooks in place or add adjustment with buckle at one end or a fixed length strap.
It might look nice to put a line of stitches along the edges of the strap marking punching sewing takes about 10 minutes per inch and the strap is 42 inches long and has two sides, I know you do the maths.

MY63
February 21st, 2015, 06:57 AM
As soon as I started to apply the dye I realised that I needed to change the way I was doing things it was always in my mind that the best way to do the strap was a trigger hook at each end. With a buckle to allow for some small adjustment in the length of the strap from around 40 to 45 inches.

I cut 1/4 off the length to fix a buckle and cut another end shape at the strap end so I now have this

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7446/16393764227_cd3e44e22b_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/qYEjXn)IMG_9534 (https://flic.kr/p/qYEjXn) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I think I am happier with this if I don't like it I will buy another length of leather on Monday,
Don't worry about the colour as it has been soaked in water to help the dye to soak into the leather it should lighten up as it dries

Thanks for looking

Michael

I am pleased that you like the strap on its shortest setting it is 42 inches between the centres of the trigger hooks.
The ends are indeed meant to look like nibs the stitching was very difficult to do around the tight corners but it looks ok.

The mounting pieces are more challenging than I thought my book recommends a certain thickness for a 1 inch "D" ring however the leather I have will not form to the required shape.
Plan B is to use a double thickness of thinner leather to make it strong enough.

Once they are sorted I will sew the back panel and it will be ready to go!

The four chicargo screws in the middle are for securing the fixing points to the case there will be glue and stitching as well but I want the fixing points to be as strong as possible.

I soaked the mounting points in cold water for about 10 minutes then used a modified clamp to form them around the edge of the case

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8677/16634794982_68f545687f_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rkXF13)IMG_9558 (https://flic.kr/p/rkXF13) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

After forming the correct shape I have applied some dye to the leather and allowed it to dry for a couple of hours.
The next stage is to mark holes for stitching and decide where the chicargo screws are going to go

I had two small hold ups today I wanted to test the strength of the leather thong I used to attach the key I felt that if it held the weight of the bag that would be strong enough.
Well it was not so I went to the suppliers to get some that was strong enough I also picked up another chicargo screw as I managed to loose half of one of the original four.
The mounting points are now fitted and are very secure.
I was a little unhappy with edges so I have sanded them all down and have started refinishing them.
After the edges are complete I promise I will let it go (honest)

My next project will be either a messenger bag from scratch or one of the Gladstone bags which I have it was awaiting restoration however the leather has been wet at some point and is rotten, The hardware is in fantastic condition and will form the basis of the new bag.

Thanks

I have spent some time on the edges today and I am almost happy with them I freely admit I am a bit of a perfectionist and the case is at least 50 years old so the odd bit of cracking around the edges is to be expected :)

The first picture shows the mounting point for the shoulder strap I had thought I would be able to sew the tab in place as well as gluing and bolting it in place this was not possible.
I took the bag to my supplier and their master saddler checked the mounting points for me he was happy with them.

As one project is on its way to a new home a new project takes its place I have been wanting to restore this bag since it arrived. unfortunately the leather was too far gone to allow for restoration.
However with a little trigger logic the restoration will proceed for those not already aware of "Only fools and horses" tv show here is a sample of Trigger logic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUl6PooveJE

I had assumed that the colour of this bag had been changed from a tan or light brown colour to a black however when taking the bag apart I found that the piping (leather between the joints) was also black, and the inside edges of the joints were also black so it would appear that this bag was black from the day it was made.

The inside of the bag has these unusual pockets possibly for medicine bottles I don't intend to replace these as I dint carry medicine bottles.

Yesterday I bought a shoulder of veg tanned leather and I have started making templates for the replacement panels

After spending half a day dying all 7 pieces black the time has come to start re assembly of this case, The original leather had thin strips of leather as a spacer between each joint.
I did not have any suitable leather and neither did my supplier so I decided to use black suede instead I think it will give an interesting contrast, but we will see.

Assembly starts with the base I stitched the sides first followed by the lower end pieces the upper end pieces are made from a more flexible leather and will be lined in red suede before fitting.

This is the upper end piece and is the most complicated piece to cut and prepare as it must fold to allow the bag to open and close in this picture you can see the old and the new side by side.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7602/16825765445_44190b2c75_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rCQrSe)IMG_9749_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rCQrSe) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The eagle eyed may have noticed that the new piece is slightly larger than the old one this takes into account the fact that the old edges have curled.

This piece does not have a backer board and needs to have the suede glued on with latex cement for flexibility but also because it needs to be sewn into place while it is wet to allow it to accept the required shape.
It will become clear tomorrow (fingers crossed) in the mean time they will go back into the plastic bag.

Thanks

Thank you so much for the great photos and descriptions of what you're doing. I had no idea that you needed to sew the bag from the inside and then turn it, requiring the seams to fold and stay flat. (It's standard procedure when sewing cloth items, but cloth folds much more readily than leather!) Was it a lot of work after the leather was soaked?

Can't wait to see how you handle the lock.

MY63

Hi Elaineb

Once the veg tanned leather is soaked the hard leather becomes very soft and it is very easy to turn the right way around, it will not tear but it will pick up marks from finger nails or any thing else so you have to be careful.
You need to keep it in the shape you require as it dries because once dry it will be fixed in that shape
The bag is not fully dry yet so I am leaving it to dry fully before I decide which areas have not turned out well, I can re wet those areas to get them the way I want them.

This is a very simple lock it has a single plate (lever) that moves up and down it is called a single lever lock more complicated locks have more levers 5 is the number of levers in a high security lock in the UK,
Fitted in the lever is a small spring which is essential it is on the right in this picture the lock is open

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8724/16254938123_da4e031a3e_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/qLoNMR)IMG_9787_1 (https://flic.kr/p/qLoNMR) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

In the second picture you can see the key and the lever is in the locked position

In the third picture you can see the whole lock together but inside out so you can see how it works the two silver pins are moved in and out when the two buttons are squeezed on the other side when in the locked position the lever stops any movement.

I have learned another important lesson this week, I made templates for the cardboard pieces that line the inside of the bag which are then wrapped in suede and glued in place.
So what I have learned is that does not work the dimensions of the bag have changed and my templates were no good so I had to start again

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7629/16750607618_7da029606a_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rwcf4C)IMG_9804_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rwcf4C) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

As you can see from the picture I have re made all of the pieces and they are ready to be wrapped in suede.
I managed to track down some rivets for the metal work which I am rubbing down ready to re paint it, I was unhappy with the finish of the brush on enamel paint so will be getting some spray on paint tomorrow.

Unfortunately the metal work I sprayed yesterday is still a little tacky and I noticed a run in the paint this morning so I will need to do a little more work on that.

Regular readers will remember I have been searching for replacement rivets and have found a supplier in the UK who had just what I needed

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8706/16766802609_3fc4937d72_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rxCfgB)IMG_9830_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rxCfgB) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Dying leather is not easy getting an even colour is almost impossible getting something you are happy with is a compromise which I often find difficult.
I start the process with a 50 50 mix of dye and dye reducer so after two days of applying coat after coat this is what I have

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7699/16919320860_08e5e7061e_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rM6WCC)IMG_9954_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rM6WCC) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

It is a rich and deep colour for some reason it looks more patchy in the pictures than it does in person.

The next stage is to think about the handle one of the requests for this project was for a handle that was attached directly to the bag with as little flex as possible you can buy handle kits but there is no fun in that.
So this is how I am going to start a 3mm diameter leather thong and a piece of leather

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8784/16919224210_9528c28c42_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rM6rUf)IMG_9961_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rM6rUf) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Roll the thong in the leather and add a little glue

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8687/16486644853_b2317f0af5_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/r7Sn8t)IMG_9964_1 (https://flic.kr/p/r7Sn8t) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The diameter changes to 12 mm this is the core of the handle I will add layers of leather to form the final shape

I have started the assembly process on the burgundy bag commissioned by a member on fpn, I started this morning by backing the dyed leather in the cognac suede chosen for this project.

The gusset piece had been soaked in water before the suede was glued in place I folded the gusset in half and pressed it down.

The reason for starting with the centre is when I restored the pendragon case earlier in this thread I found it very difficult to add the centre section.

Sometimes hitting the thanks button is just not enough I do appreciate your comments it means a lot to me to know my work is enjoyed by others.

This picture shows the front piece and the rear pocket I had thought of running a line of stitching around the top edge of these panels as well as the centre divider there is also a technique to add a crease along the inside of the edge to add some detail however I am unsure what to add or if I should leave it alone

I went to my suppliers this morning and asked the master saddler and he said "leave it alone it is fine" so that is what I will do.

I need to finish the handle so I have glued a strip of leather to my tube and built up the ends there are no handles like this in my books so I am learning as I go the request was for a fixed handle without joints.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7614/16534372644_edd9ed6bd8_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rc5YWq)IMG_9979_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rc5YWq) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

As you can see I have a long strip which will be fixed to the bag and I will wrap the round section and the strip in the same leather as the rest of the bag I plan on using the off cut from the flap on the front of the bag which I made extra long, (of course I did that on purpose) :haha:

The burgundy bag for want of a better name has caused me some issues over the last few weeks like many people I sometimes doubt my own ability and the flap and fastening straps caused me much doubt.
In the end I realised that the straps were too large and this was throwing all of my measurements out once I realised this was the issue I was able to cut the straps down to size and fit them this morning after cutting the flap to the correct length.
I will explain more about straps and their fitting later for now though.

That burgundy bag is gorgeous! It's coming together really nicely. It looks like a sleeker, modern version of the vintage Pendragon cases. Very impressive.

MY63
April 21st, 2015, 12:08 PM
Thanks Reprieve it is indeed in the Pendragon style the fastening straps were made from the template I took from your very own case, I have reduced them in size as the case is a little smaller.
This is my first bag made entirely by me so I am very pleased with it.

MY63
April 21st, 2015, 01:03 PM
I cut the upper and lower straps from the same template the upper ones are just attached to the flap,

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7715/16605811553_5c2ccb1ccc_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rip8eK)IMG_0049_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rip8eK) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The lower straps need a stronger hold so a slot is cut for the pin then the strap is folded back under as you can see from the picture, to add more strength I have punched a hole for a rivet. according to the book I should cut a slot in the front of the case and pass the lower part of the strap through before riveting through the front of the case and the lower part of the strap.
The upper part of the strap is the sewn into place this allows the upper part of the strap to lie almost flat while covering the head of the rivet.

I hope this makes sense

Michael

Thanks for the link a very interesting way to combat knock offs,
People wonder how leather goods are so expensive one of the hides they use might only make two bags as there is at least 15% waste on that type of hide, and you need to be careful where you use the belly leather as it stretches. Straps need to be cut down the back bone where the leather is strongest. And I bet he did not get any change from $500 for one hide.
I use a similar thread waxed polyester and it is very expensive £25 per reel, I prefer solid brass to stainless steel but they are very expensive.
I am making my first bag from scratch at the moment I have made what the customer asked for but my inspiration came from an old English bag that now belongs to reprieve I would love to make a full size version but it would be fairly expensive.
I don't have a sewing machine so everything I do is sewn by hand.
Sorry for rambling

I have made some progress today the first picture is the inside of the front of the bag with the tab from the buckle strap riveted in place since I took this picture I have also sewn around the edge, Another reason for the back being smaller than the front so the stitching on the front does not interfere with the stitching inside

Today I have glued the gusset to the rear section which includes the front flap having previously marked out the stitching holes around the front flap which I had considered sewing before attaching any pieces, I prefer to sew with as few joins in the thread as possible ok that really means no joins at all, I have in picked cases in the past rather than join the thread.
In this case the length of thread is around 24 ft crazy but it keeps me happy.

There are three spaces as you can see I think the centre space will make a good laptop compartment with some padding and some suede of course. One of the two sides would be turned around to allow the leather to be on the outside of the compartment.

It's easy to spray paint metal and have it look nice and smooth. It's also just as easy for the paint to sag and run when applied at this heavy a Mil. Your work is pristine. It looks like it's been powder coated. Did you use an HV/LP for that or a rattle can?

I am quite low tech here I used a rattle can and lots of coats I do have an air brush but have not found the time to learn how to use it. Actually you have reminded me this bag is not yet finished as I was thinking of keeping it for myself it keeps getting pushed back.

My original plan for this case was to add it to my collection however there is another project that I wish to make and to do that I must clear some space so I have decided to sell this case after restoration.
I have already purchased red suede for the interior but once I have started I am not so sure it is more brown than red something is telling me cognac would be a better colour.

Most of my brief bags have a light interior like your bag originally did, because that is the other side of the leather. But I have one that is navy inside and out. As a user, I much prefer a light-colored interior, because it's easier to find things inside the bag. Hence, if it were mine, I would want a suede color similar to the original light tan or beige. Perhaps like the tan interior of my Nakaya case. JMHO. :)

Thanks for the responses
I was advised by my supplier to keep bag interiors as light as possible so I think Laura's information supports that suggestion.

I have grouped together a sample of the lighter leathers. top is bluish grey, yellow, turquoise, red, cognac, and black just to give a base line colour.

Carlc I have to admit I am not the best sales person in the world.

The other option is to cover it in leather

I placed scrap pieces of leather along the front and top of the leather wrap before adding the clips to hold things in place whilst the leather dried.

interesting fact when you place metal on wet veg tanned leather it turns the leather black in fact if you dissolve wire wool in white vinegar you can make a black leather dye called vinegaroon.

So the dark marks on the leather are the result of a chemical reaction between the metal clips and the tannins in the leather

I have ordered a set of stitching punches in the correct size to match the existing holes which are six stitches per inch.

Here is an interesting question. if I planned to sell this case or one like it should I offer it in the classifieds section before I put it back together and give a choice of suede colours. Or just offer a finished case.

http://www.swaineadeneybrigg.com/papworth-article/papworth-history/
If you have a few spare minutes it is worth a read and the disability Trust is still going to this day.

Those interesting straps were not even sewn to the front of the case the stitching only went through the strap. the only thing holding the straps in place was some sort of glue.
They just peeled off in my hand which saved me a job of unpicking the stitching. I have coated the whole thing in mink oil and will leave it to soak in for a few days.

The handle is stripped I will take some pictures tomorrow

To form the leather to the inside of the handle I soaked the leather in water and pushed it inside the handle then stuffed the void with kitchen towel and held the handle closed with a piece of leather

Once dry the leather pieces held the shape of the inside of the handle and were then glued in place.

A few weeks ago I was asked by a FPN member to look at a case that belonged to a family friend who had served in WW 2 in the United States Army Air Force.

We know the case was used in the second World War so it is at least 70 years old and some areas are quite worn as you would expect.

The stitching is coming apart as I have been cleaning and conditioning the leather.

The owner would like to bring the case up to a useable condition and I have agreed to do it.

I hope everyone enjoys the journey

After applying a few coats of mink oil to soften and condition the leather. I spent a few hours yesterday and this morning cutting out the old stitching to be honest I could have just pulled it apart but I have learned not to do that.

The next stage involves more mink oil and scraping all of the edges clean of old glue and pieces of thread as well as anything else that I might find.

I have also made some progress on the Pendragon case I have glued the green suede in place I used small paper clips at one end to hold the suede in place while I applied the glue once the glue was ready I folded the suede back into place and smoothed it out removing the clips

This is how I make straps rather than keep a whole hide for making straps I buy 1 inch strips of leather to make them with. It is slightly thicker than the normal leather I use. I have used the stitch grooving tool to make a grove for the stitching (self explanatory I know) the other tool in this picture is for removing the square corners left after cutting

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5683/20539322124_626725c001_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/xhZoTw)

DSC_0001 (https://flic.kr/p/xhZoTw) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

42 to 46 inches seems to be the ideal strap length the cut lengths I buy are around 48 inches long. I use two to give me extra length to fix the trigger hooks and adjustment buckles as each one requires about two inches. As there are two of each then this will require 12 inches and then an allowance for the strap ends to pass through the buckles another 12 inches. To end up with a strap of 46 inches I need to have 70 inches of strapping.

Sewing is continuing.

I have started dying the straps this is very much guess work the case has many years of wear I think it may have been a saddle tan colour originally so I have started with that colour.

As the dye is applied to wet leather I need to wait until tomorrow to see if it is anywhere near I think it might be a little too light however it is very easy to add more colour but almost impossible to remove it.

The colour above is a 50 50 mix of saddle tan and dye reducer to give a lighter colour and reduce the risk of darker patches.

To get an aged effect I have lightly buffed the strap with carnauba wax and then lightly brushed with neat saddle tan dye

Last night I was looking for ideas for the strap like the positioning of buckles I have noticed that many of the leading makers only have buckles on one side for adjustment they also have a shoulder pad.

I am not to sure about the single buckle I quite like the matching buckles on either side but I do like the pad which I made last night.

I thought I would share some more detail on the strap pad.

After gluing the two pieces of leather together I cut out the required shape decided where the slots were going to go punched the holes and cut the slots. I used a special tool to make a grove around the inside of the cut line the distance was the thickness of the leather.

In this picture you can see the pad with the tool I used to mark out the stitches it is a punch and will go through the leather quite easil

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/589/21079628698_43edeb6477_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/y7JBd7)DSC_0009[1] (https://flic.kr/p/y7JBd7) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

These are my awls well two of them (I have quite a few now)

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5677/20646376493_f76fb391e0_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/xss5qv)DSC_0012[1] (https://flic.kr/p/xss5qv) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Although the awls look the same they are different sizes only the point and first 5 mm are sharpened. Not only are they sharp but I have polished them on an strop they will pierce thick leather quite easily. They also go through human skin too.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/751/21267537915_0a6ac27384_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ypkG5c)DSC_0020[1] (https://flic.kr/p/ypkG5c) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Once marked with the punch I use the awl to finish the hole to the required size for the thread and needle.

I have adapted my sewing method to suit my disability so I am not going to tell you how I sew Nigel Armitage is the best teacher.

It's an education. Not just in how to craft these items, but also introducing tools many of which I have never even heard of let alone seen! I can sew a button on. Don't know about stitching leather... well, closest I have come is stitching human skin, but that's another story. :)

Sewing larger projects is difficult especially for me "proper" leather workers have clams for holding their work these are quite expensive and I don't have a budget for more tools at the moment.

I was discussing this with a friend earlier this week I mentioned I was going to try to make one by laminating some plywood into the correct curved shape, He suggested I go to the barrel makers over the river and buy some staves the curved pieces of oak that make up a barrel.

After some serious sanding without removing all of the character and a little trimming followed by some wax

I added a piece of heavy leather to the bottom as a hinge and some extra leather on the top of each stave

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/574/21290344162_c8edc8a81c_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/yrmzzm)DSC_0034[1] (https://flic.kr/p/yrmzzm) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

We have been discussing stitching over on FPN especially around the length of thread. Here is a picture of my thread before I started sewing the strap edges as my arm span is 5 ft 6 inches and I used four lengths this thread is 22 ft long.

I had planned to sew this in two sections hiding the joints under the strap pad in the centre.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/574/21317323332_3a4506685f_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ytJRxs)DSC_0050[1] (https://flic.kr/p/ytJRxs) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

As I approached the first joint I realised my rough thread measuring technique was a little too rough. Not wishing to waste any thread I decided to carry on sewing and make a joint

Here is the finished saddle clam the barrel staves were a little on the short side so I cut two pieces of oak and shaped the bottom and screwed it to the bottom of the staves it also adds a little spring to keep the staves tighter together.

The front panel has been cleaned and given a light polish my camera is currently not speaking to my computer so I am using my phone for pictures the actual item is not glossy at all.

While removing the thread I discovered a sample that was intact although it was only an inch long I was able to unwind it. it was a linen thread with 4 strands with reverse twist (I had some help with that) I consulted a specialist supplier who advised me of the correct thread from the 1940 's would have most likely been a Barbour Irish linen thread which should arrive tomorrow.

I have started making the replacement straps for the USAAF case in keeping with the rest of the case the straps have some detail on them.

The detail is a pair of creases running parallel to the edges this crease is unusual as it is quite wide and originally was quite deep.

To replicate it on the new strap I have used a stitching grove tool to give the required detail.

To help me along I was looking for a small project to keep me busy many years ago I had a watch that I really liked but the strap kept wearing through where the padded areas met the buckle.

Anyway I found the watch and half of the strap in a drawer and thought I would have a go.

This is the original well half of it

Here is my first attempt at a replacement

My first watch strap I made the piece without the buckle longer but unfortunately not long enough as it does not fit my wrist :)

The dye also went a bit wonky.

Version two to follow soon

I also bought this and it was delivered today it is an English bridle hide made by J E Sedgewick it is larger than I planned on buying but that is the way leather is you tell them the size that you want and the send you a hide as close as possible to what you ordered usually bigger.

The colour is London Tan and it is going to be a brief case in fact it might well be two and some other small cases.

The thread for the USAAF case also came in the same package

The lining leather which I wet moulded yesterday has dried overnight and is now waiting to be glued together.

As you can see the lining leather has added to the integrity of the gusset piece already. In normal circumstances I would not always glue the lining in place as there will be plenty of stitching to secure it. In this case I want the lining to be completely joined to the original piece as tis will prevent any future tearing or splitting of the outer leather.

Before I can re assemble this case I need to sort the edges of the dividers which are made from two pieces of leather glued together.

I could have just ran a bead of glue along the top and left it at that, but I have used a knife and bone folder to open up the joint and then added glue then applied pressure to bring the pieces together.

when the glue has dried I will sand and refinish the edges with beeswax.

I like shinny things earlier in the week I ordered a lock and handle fittings for my new case they are all solid brass and made in the UK.

The only item I need now is the meatal bar that the handle attaches to on the other side of the leather it stops the case sagging when you pick it up.

Here are the two internal dividers with the repaired edges.

I have also glued all of the linings to the outer pieces of the case. All of the lining leather is to be left the natural colour it will only have a protective coat of wax.

I am still mixing dye to try and get a colour match that I am happy with

Hi Intelidepth if you decide to have a go I would be happy to help you in any way that I can.

The colour is a bit off I am using my phone camera as my little canon does not like windows 10 I am hoping Santa may bring me a new camera :)

At least the colour is off on both the new straps and the case equally.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/678/21700737996_de0f5213e6_k.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/z4BXn7)DSC_0197[1] (https://flic.kr/p/z4BXn7) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The repairs to the dividers are now complete and the edges that are visible have had beeswax applied and they have been burnished which means rubbed with a piece of hardwood or rough cloth to cause friction and melt into the pours of the leather.

This was the position earlier in the week before my recent hospital visit to have more injections into my damaged hand to keep it working for another three months. I have also started to sew the dividers into the gusset piece I knew this would be tricky before I began and I was not disappointed :)

Time for re assembly of the USAAF case. I have finished sewing the dividers into the gusset piece and the handle plates along with the pocket that holds the metal support bar.
As these pieces are visible have used the existing holes where possible.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5703/21749138239_0a5d2e64d7_k.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/z8U254)DSC_0247[1] (https://flic.kr/p/z8U254) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I plan to thin the edges of the leather before I attach he front and rear pieces. this will involve marking a line around the inside edge and using a very sharp round knife removing a strip of leather from that area.

Talking of really sharp knives I have been putting it to good use my own case has progressed from a piece of 11 square feet I now have this.
The first piece cut was he straps followed by the long piece which is the gusset piece then the back front and divider were cut out the smaller pieces to the left and the top are what was left these will be used for the handle and the fasteners.

Rather than cutting for minimum wastage I have selected the very best parts of the hide for the important sections like front and the flap.

Here we have all of the pieces leather and hardware that are needed to make the case.

After struggling with the colour of this case for some time I realised that as I had used a saddle tan dye with lots of coats the orange tint I was blaming on my phone camera was actually down to the background tint of the dye.

So I used a darker dye diluted to cover that tint and make the case even closer to its original colour.

I am in the process of finishing the edges and once that is complete it will be time to send it back to its home in the USA.

It has taken a long time to bring this case back to a useable condition and I Think it will be good for another 70 years.

Thanks for looking
