I thought i would look for an ink that matches tarheel blue(carolina blue). On the scale it is pantone 542. I was thinking china blu3 might work, but have not had a chance to try it. Any help would be appreciate. Pantone 278 would also work.

Can you post swatches of those colours? That would help identify potential matches.

OK - how about Sailor Jentle Sky High Blue (now discontinued but available still at Anderson Pens, I think). Or alternatively Sailor Four Seasons Souten.
Then there's Kobe 42 Rokko Island Sky or Diamine China Blue?

You might also consider J. Herbin Bleu Azur.

Is it too light or too dark? What is it that isn't quite right? It is hard to judge exactly what you are looking for as the swatches you posted above are quite different. Which do you prefer of those two?

Sky high is too "warm". Diamine china blue sounds about right, but I've only ever seen swatches.

Contact Office Supplies & More (http://www.yelp.com/biz/office-supplies-and-more-chapel-hill) in Chapel Hill. They're the local fountain pen and ink specialty shop, and I bet this is a question they've had to answer before. If anybody knows, they will.
