View Full Version : An unusual case

I like to make cases that are different so when I was asked if I could make a quiver for some oblique pens I said yes.

There has been a lot of communication regarding the style of case

This is the starting point a 100 mm or 4inch ventilation pipe which will act as a template

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3854/14696405596_18e5c3074a_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ooEVno)IMG_8033 (https://flic.kr/p/ooEVno) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

This is the high quality Suede for the inside

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5580/14739241763_3860bf5e35_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/osst4Z)IMG_8030 (https://flic.kr/p/osst4Z) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

There will be suede on the inside then a layer of kydex and then the outer leather cover it sounds simple but we will see.

Thanks for looking

I'll post better pictures tomorrow when the light is good. This is my collection for now, but I foresee adding more in the future. :) Forum member Brian Smith (Musinkman) is the craftsman who made the holders.

I wanted something secure to take them to classes, conventions, and such. Inside the tube, the holders will be in a silk wrap to prevent them from scratching each other.

This project has been a true collaboration from from the start. Michael is great to work with, and I'm excited to see the process as well as the final product.

I have made a start on this project today for my first attempt at making a large cylinder in kydex I heated it until it was soft and tried to wrap it around the pipe this did not work.
So after a cup of tea I tried putting the kydex inside the pipe and heating it however it kept bubbling so I tried again using a 2litre soda bottle

Another failure

Not wanting to admit defeat I decided to use a low tech method

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5590/14746024753_c43f2d84a7_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ot4eq6)IMG_8037 (https://flic.kr/p/ot4eq6) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

I punched holes and have sewed the cylinder together well I am half way down it is inside the pipe to keep the shape while I am sewing.

Looking forward to seeing the finished case! What kind of leather are you using for the outside layer?

Hi Adam
I have bought veg tan shoulder 2 mm but I wonder if it will be thick enough I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

MY63

I thought about this overnight and decided that the kydex was not essential so I have inserted a 5 mm thick piece of leather which I have glued the suede

like this

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3905/14712059306_8be70a39cd_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/oq49EW)IMG_8059 (https://flic.kr/p/oq49EW) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

I have dyed the outer cover

Like this

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2924/14548619547_647a6c79c9_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/oaBtJ4)IMG_8065 (https://flic.kr/p/oaBtJ4) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

The joined the outer cover to the other pieces

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2934/14732698314_0222bcfdae_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/orSVVU)IMG_8066 (https://flic.kr/p/orSVVU) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

The offset overlap on the right hand side is for the joint I did not like the idea of an angled joint so I have created an overlap.

The inspiration came form here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3Vux9RY9Vw

The lid and body are in one piece at the moment I will separate them tomorrow when the glue is dry, Then I will mark out the stitching there is a lot of sewing in this case so it might take a few days.

Thanks for looking

Hi Adam

Michael, in fact, I would have referred to that video by Nigel Armitage. The man's just brilliant. In addition, his voice in the other videos is so sonorous and soothing that my girlfriend calls him the Bob Ross of leatherworking. :)

You could also butt-stitch a round container with a curved awl like I did on this traditional (medieval) knife sheath:

http://fpgeeks.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=12991&stc=1

When properly wet, the veg-tan is easily butt-stitched and holds its shape well after drying. The one big advantage of butt-stitching is that the thread is sunk and thus perfectly protected from friction (Which is probably neglible on a pen case, though it killed the thread on a belt I made, rather quickly).

Anyway, I'm very much interested in seeing the final case!

Cheers,
Adam

I love what you have shown so far :) This case has evolved quite a bit from what we started with, but I like the direction we turned. These aren't my photos but are the ones from the pen listings on Etsy. They are better than ones I can take right now. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/25/saqadazy.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/25/5y5a7eqe.jpg

Thanks Polyhistor

I am going to use a double line of saddle stitch.

I had an early start this morning so I have been thinking about the handle

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2896/14739654972_f810ac40a3_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/osuzUh)IMG_8067 (https://flic.kr/p/osuzUh) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

I have used this nib shape in the past so it is a possible detail for the handle fixing points and could also be used on the securing straps for the lid.

MY63
July 25th, 2014, 10:17 AM
Tiffany asked the other day if she could have a handle on this case, I have a book on bag and case making and chose a handle.

I started with a flat strip of leather and cut the end to a slightly larger version of the piece shown above.
The handle I chose is a round handle and requires a centre so I found a piece of cord which was not quite big enough so I wrapped it in leather.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5582/14742072592_7df6bb489f_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/osGYzo)IMG_8071 (https://flic.kr/p/osGYzo) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

The next step was to bring the two pieces together and fold the handle around the leather wrapped cord

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3839/14740012814_1e891c127c_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/oswqgY)IMG_8074 (https://flic.kr/p/oswqgY) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

Then 3.5 hours of sewing and we have something that resembles a handle

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2939/14739203921_25ee42a08f_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ossgPx)IMG_8075 (https://flic.kr/p/ossgPx) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

I did not dye the leather before making the handle as I was not expecting such a good result first time plus if tiffany does not like it I will make something else to use it on.

Nigel's video makes it all look very easy believe me it is not.
The combined thickness is now 8mm and pushing the awl through is very difficult.

This morning I have reshaped my awl and sharpened it to the point where it will go through the leather (and fingers) it will take a long time to sew the case together and then there is all of the extra lines of sewing that I added because they look good.

On a project like this, it's fun to actually measure the time each line of stitching takes. As you gain more and more practice, things will speed up incredibly. :thumb:

I measure my lines by the day rather than the hour this is what I have done today in my defence I do only have limited use of my right hand I have had some difficulty sewing the long sides of the case as it is only 4 inches in diameter and my hand just fits but getting the needle in the hole is a challenge.
The original diameter was going to be 3 inches our model was a pringles can :)

I wanted something more than just a cap as the lid section also serves as storage for nibs and ink there will be studs half way down the top section and on the main body.
this will allow the top section to be removed without the nibs etc scattering everywhere.

I have to be honest I am a little unsure of the handle I may make something smaller and maybe flat to match the straps then Tiffany can choose.

Thanks

As always, Micheal, it is amazing to watch the process you go through to solve the design problems in each new project. This case is a tour de force.

My personal opinion, and it's not a strong one, just a thought, is that I would have the nib out lines meet but not overlap on the very top of the case, and if a central something seemed necessary add a stud of some kind. Alternatively, the four points could meet at stubbish corners and sort of form a tiny internal square. (Not sure I am expressing that in a way anyone but myself can picture, however.)

On the other hand, that may be brutal sewing, in which case certainly not worth it.

I don't understand how the top will have storage that does not fall into the bottom, but I am perfectly certain that as you continue and post photos it will all come clear to me!

MY63

Scrivelry as ever you are right on track, In my haste to get the template ready I did not trim the ends of the card.
I think a small square left open will attract debris, I think it will be best for two to meet end to end and the other two to butt up against them.
There are days of sewing still to come on this project and I will be adding more.

The top section will have a piece of leather fitted in line with the second line of stitching and the same for the base section don't worry if you cant see it I will explain as we go.

Todays task was to take the odd shaped cylinder and make it round.
This type of leather is very malleable when it is wet as it dries it becomes hard so this morning I wet the leather.

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3851/14767126304_8fde952b1c_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ouVoaW)IMG_8110 (https://flic.kr/p/ouVoaW) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

This is my heath robinson contraption to apply pressure from the inside so I placed the plastic inside the leather cylinder and then the open bottle I then added some soft drink and then shook the bottle the pressure inside pushed the bottle back to its shape and forced the plastic and leather out and into the desired shape.

I mentioned the end pieces yesterday so I thought I would show a little more detail of what they are and how they are made
Starting with a flat piece of leather which I soaked in water until no more bubbles came out.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5581/14774043992_0201c123cf_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ovwQyq)IMG_8120 (https://flic.kr/p/ovwQyq) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

Once wet I roughly shaped the leather and put it inside the cylinder and then started working the edges to smooth them out this took a little while

They will be sewn in place over the next few days I have to admit I over did the sewing the other day and seem to have made a needle sized hole in my finger so I will be back to sewing in a couple of days.

I have started sewing the top of the main body today it is more difficult because it has the insert to hold the upper section in place this takes the thickness up to 11 mm it is very difficult to get the needles through.

Anyway whilst doing this I was thinking about the lid which I have also made today, the meeting of the straps on the lid has been on my mind sine Scrivelry mentioned it the other day.
So I have come up with this button for the centre of the lid the straps will end at the edge of the button.

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3906/14625909080_55faafa601_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ohrBdd)IMG_8185_1 (https://flic.kr/p/ohrBdd) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

Securing straps are the next thing on my list although I have misplaced the template for the ends I also need to make the pieces that hold the securing studs as the bolts are not long enough to go through the sides of the case.
I had planned on making them in a diamond shape using the nib type design only smaller but I cant get it to work, I will have another try tomorrow.

Tiffany if it is ok with you I will use round pieces for the studs I cannot get the nib ones to work and as we have a round case with a round detail on the top it will look ok.
Would you like the button in a different colour? Yellow ? Or stick with oxblood.
Someone on fpn has done some drawings of a wrap with kydex tubes to do a similar job as your quiver it s spooky as it is just like the one we discussed.
It has really made my day that someone has been inspired by my work to think about a project as this was my intention from the outset.

I am pleased that you like the case so far it looks just as I saw it in my head, I am proud to say that I made it.

Round pieces for the studs is fine.

As far as the color of the button, my first reaction is to say oxblood, but I could be convinced to say yellow if you felt strongly that it would be best. :)

Ok round it is here are some I prepared this afternoon the idea here is the stud is fixed to the disc and the disc is then attached to the case it should keep the strap away from the case and prevent rubbing.

I have finished dying the pieces just need to wait for everything to dry if you are wondering what the thread is for, this dye is designed to dye skin any skin and it takes ages to wear off

I have now finished the mounting discs for the studs of course I have run out I had another pack but that had also been opened I had six in one pack and seven in the other but the are slightly different so I will fix them in place once I have another pack.

All of the remaining work involves sewing through multiple layers which is very difficult so I will do a section as I can.

I will of course continue to post updates here.

A quick update I have completed another ring of stitches around the top of the lower section this has an extra piece of leather inside to support the upper section so there is almost 10 mm of leather.
I have also worked out the position of the straps so I can sew them to the lid which will then allow me to position the studs and once they are in place I can sew the bottom in place and the case will be finished.
I made some little (well almost little) leather thimbles to protect my fingers they have worked a treat I have sewed most of the evening between coats of dye and my fingers are intact.
Pictures will follow when it is light.

Absolutely! I have two pieces of vintage Japanese kimono silk that I've ordered to make an inner wrap to keep the pens from scratching each other, so I'll post pictures of that when it's finished, too. I haven't received the fabric in the mail yet because they are coming from Germany and Australia, but they both spoke to me as I perused the options. I think they'll coordinate well.

I like to make cases that are different so when I was asked if I could make a quiver for some oblique pens I said yes.

There has been a lot of communication regarding the style of case

This is the starting point a 100 mm or 4inch ventilation pipe which will act as a template

I have noticed a small issue with the handle it is sewn and glued in place although it was not designed to take a lot of weight it will hold a 2 litre soda bottle which weighs 2 kg.
I have thought about it and I have decided to add two Chicago studs they are like rivets but screw together, I will pick them up tomorrow I know the handle is not likely to come off but I would not want to take the risk.

I am still applying carnauba wax to the case so it wont cause any delay

Here is the dragon fly notebook cover Tiffany mentioned

I went today to purchase the studs and spoke to a Master Saddler who advised against fitting the studs he suggested that the handle would be best used by putting a hand through and using it as a support,
Normal use would not cause the stitching to give way he pulled on it pretty hard and it passed inspection I am pleased as he said it was very good so I am pleased.

I will finish the notebook cover today and start wrapping it up.

Thanks

I ordered some Japanese kimono silk from Etsy to make a lightweight wrap for the pens, but when I received the fabric, the colors clashed with the oxblood leather. (That's ok, though, because it's perfect for a scarf!) Until new fabric arrives, I'm making do with an old pen wrap that was tucked away in the back of a drawer. It's too bulky and doesn't have deep enough pockets for what this project needs, but it's good enough to get by for now.

As you can see, Michael did a fantastic job. The case is exactly what I needed, and it's sturdy enough that I will be able to pass it on as an heirloom when the time comes.

Excuse the cluttered, dusty desk. This is real life. ;)

Thanks, Tiffany - great pictures, really showing the case in use - I especially like how you've got some of the Skrip in boxes that reflect the colors of the case hanging out there in the background.

That is really a museum-worthy piece. enjoy!!!!

These pictures cannot adequately show the obvious care and finishing that went into this case. Not only does it look good now, but it will still look good in a few decades when someone inherits it. The leather will have a patina, but the seams will be solid.

Thanks Tiffany It was a pleasure to make it for you
When we started talking about a case I never thought it would turn out as it did, the case evolved as we discussed your requirements and what was possible with the materials.
I am pleased that you like it I am proud to say "I made that"
Have a great time at the pen show

Michael
