Good afternoon!

I just wanted to let people know that I've made some pen rolls and Midori-style notebooks and that they're for sale in my Etsy shop http://www.betsypreston.etsy.com.

The faux-doris are made of fabric with a thick interfacing core. They're firm, but flexible. They're big enough to accept Field Notes, Moleskine Cahier, Banditapple Carnet Peewee, Leuchtturm 1017 Jottbook Pocket, etc.

The pen rolls are a mix of 6, 13, and 14 slots. Some have fabric ties, some have suede ties.

There are bright fun colors and more reserved rich colors. Here are a few examples (there are more in the Etsy shop). Thanks for looking!

I was very happy to find a big chunk of the koi fabric recently when I started cataloging my fabric. I can make some stuff and still have some left over, and not have to make the tough decision whether to "use it up". Not for a while anyway!

Gotta ask.

What is a Doris and why would someone want a faux-Doris?

Gotta ask.

What is a Doris and why would someone want a faux-Doris?

"Midori" is a brand of leather planner/journal/notebook "system".

The original is a rectangle of leather folded in half, with elastic running down the inside of the spine. You slip the elastic thru the center of a notebook insert (lined paper, plain, datebook, homemade, etc) to hold it inside the cover. You can insert additional notebooks or pocket folders or other inserts a few different ways. Some people run several strings of elastic thru the spine. I like to "chain" additional inserts together by using elastic or rubber bands to attach the covers of two adjacent books together.

It's different than planners/notebooks/journals with ring binders or other type of binding.

There are a bunch of reasons to want a "faux" dori. The authentic Midoris come in two sizes: one is tall and narrow and takes Midori brand inserts as well as some Banditapple brand notebooks, the other size is smaller and is too short to take many of the common notebooks like Field Notes and Moleskine. You can get faux-dories in custom sizes to take just about any notebook refill. Faux-dories are often less expensive than the original. And you can get faux-dories made out of bunch of different materials (mine are fabric with a foamy core to give them stiffness and strength) and colors.

There is usually an elastic band that goes around the notebook cover to keep the whole thing closed. There are many options to add pen loops. You could spend weeks checking out all the different ways people use their notebooks and decorate them.

I hope that answers your question! If not, ask me more or google it - you'll find tons of pictures and videos online.

Got is. Doris is not Doris but an abbreviation of some brand of notebook.

Yes!

People often refer to "faux" doris by the name of the maker: BetsyDori, Jendori, etc.

Hahahaha. Okay, I just realized "Doris" as in "rhymes with Boris". I'm so used to hearing "Door-eee" in my head that I didn't even see it!

Love the koi too. Very nice work. Looked to buy one on your page but didn't see that design. Is it still available?

The koi pen roll just sold last night. I plan to make another one this week. I'm not sure yet how many slots it will have. I think it'll end up being between 6 and 12.

A 6 or 12 would be fine. :-)

I confess I was the person who snagged the first koi pen roll that Betsy made (holds 14 pens). The fabric is fantastic, and the pen roll is beautiful! It is very carefully made. It's even more beautiful in hand (very glittery), though the pictures capture it well.

I made a few new Halloween items for fun and put them up in my store http://betsypreston.etsy.com. They are all "shakers" - there is a layer of sheer material over the base and in between are confetti and spangles that move around when you gently shake it.

I am giving away a Halloween-themed "shaker" postcard to one randomly selected person.

Mention the give-away in an Etsy message to my shop between now and midnight on Friday, October 24th and I will randomly select one person to receive the fun shaker postcard. Come check out my fabric Doris, pen rolls, and other items!

You are an *evil* evil enabler. ;) I've been thinking about trying field notes but told myself a new leather cover would be too expensive... But you made one with my beloved *goldfish.*

This weekend I found a few pre-cut chunks for the Fieldnotes sized books. Finally got around to finishing them. I've had that koi/goldfish fabric for years, but now it's pretty much gone. Glad I finally hit on a way to use it that I get to enjoy and share with a few other people!
