Does anyone have a Duke Confucius Compound Art Fountain Pen? I have seen them on Amazon, they have a three tine nib (like a music nib), which is bent (like a fude nib) and has two layers (there is a metal "ink collecting plate" with the nib on top of that). So apparently it can go from extra fine to about a 1/8" line. It looks like an interesting "stunt" pen, but looks like it costs a little more than I'd spend on an experiment, so wondering if anyone has seen one in the wild or owns one?

Guessing you mean this one, which is roughly 70$, it's almost like a fude nib that's reinforced not to spring.

And an auction format on the same kind of nib (not sure if it'll get up to the buy it now price).

It doesn't really surprise me price wise. Some of the older Jinhao pens with an actual 18K gold nib (not just saying 18K on the nib) run around 60 as well.

Yeah, I don't think it's unfair, especially if they send the whole package with the box and the wooden Confucius scroll thing. Just a little more expensive than my normal impulse pen.

What does this nib do? Flex?

Depending on how you angle it you get anywhere from an extra fine to wider than broad. I don't think it flexes.

Cool. Sounds like a fun pen to have.

I imagine the upturned nib gives you an advantage when drawing because the tip won't dig into the paper when you are moving the nib in an upward direction; this way you have have any line thickness without relying on the nib being turned in a particular direction. I'm not an artist though, maybe that's not true.

I've never seen this nib before. I'm wondering if it's a gimmick - since they don't appear on other pens? I'm surprised no one has given their opinion on it.

They appear on other pens (just without the re-enforcement on top) such as the Jinhao X450, X750, etc if you do a search for "Calligraphy" nibs. The idea is when written normally they produce a very broad stroke, and the higher the writing angle the finer the strokes.

They are pretty gimmicky though compared to a stub or actual flex nib.

I think the one Duke has above with the 3 tines and cover probably provides it with an unstoppable ink flow at nearly any angle of writing.

I own one. It came in a presentation box with all SORTS of things like ink, a wiper, a tiny minion to do my bidding....okay, maybe not the minion.

So far I've only dip-tested it. It's tricky to control but it sure looks cool.

I regularly use my other fude for general everyday writing. Not this beast!

Can you post a pic of a writing sample?

I can try later.

The nib bends at an acute, sharp angle, unlike the gentle curve of most 'Chinese Calligraphy,' aka fude, pens. This makes it into less of an everyday writer, and more of a palette knife for ink. It lays down such broad swaths of color that some of it is still wet.

They ought to issue a carry license for this piece. I can't make it do what it should.

Wow...I'm impressed with what it can do. It's your secret weapon to make scrolls;). No license required.

I had one for a while. Uou can do things with it like a brush, good for character writing and drawing, although i did write with it. This is a large pen and heavy. I gave it to a friend who likes to draw with heavy pens, I prefer smaller and lighter. The nib is fascinating.
