I hadn't used these pens in quite a while, but inked them up to let a friend try italic nibs. He returned them in a couple of days, and ordered a Lamy Joy for himself. Since these still have ink in them, I may as well use it up, and am finding that I still like the pens, although I don't think either will make its way back to daily user status.

The Kaweco has a 1.1 mm nib, and a Montblanc Royal Blue cartridge. The Plumix nib is just marked <M>, but it's a slightly rounded italic of similar width. A purple Pilot cartridge in it.

The pencil is just there to keep the Plumix from rolling over, but it's a good pencil.

I use my Esterbrook Dip-Less desk pens frequently, but hadn't had one of their pocket pens inked in quite a while.

Cool Esterbrook. I'd love to see what the ink and nib writes / looks like if you get a chance.

Cool Esterbrook. I'd love to see what the ink and nib writes / looks like if you get a chance.

I'm no calligrapher, but here's a little sample. The ink is a very rich dark blue, but it's hard to capture that in a photograph. The nib is a slightly oblique stub that writes quite smoothly if you get the rotation and angle just right. No noticeable line variation.

Love the poem [emoji1], pen, ink and nib! Thanks. Interesting about the minimal line variation. I didn't use my red Esterbrook but spent a little time buffing out the haze and, wow, these pens sure clean up nicely.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180524/ffa60ec4558d65c760d2e86bba22e5ef.jpg

My red Esterbrook J transitional just ran out of ink. So I've flushed it, and filled this Esterbrook SJ, 9788 nib, with Pilot Blue-Black.

And this Esterbrook Dip-Less is always on my desk (well, writing area). 9450 nib, Noodler's Walnut. About all I use Noodler's for any more is these Dip-Less wells and refilling Pilot Varsities.

I've pretty much only used the same five or six pens in the new year. For today...

1948 Parker 51 Custom, black, fine. Quink Black having run it out of Lamy Black which is quite a bit drier. Quink works so well with this pen. My work pen today.

Pilot Stargazer, black, fine. J. Herbin Poussiere de Lune, a lovely dark purple similar to Diamine Damson but much wetter. Sadly, I found it feathers badly on my bullet journal paper. Fine for letter writing. I don't think I will get a bottle after all. The search for purple ink continues...

Apologies for this self-indulgent ramble in what should be a brief ‘what I used today’ but I thought I would talk you through my thoughts on why I like this little pen, a 1936 Parker Moderne and especially on how the pen fits in Parker pen history and also what it might have meant to the original owner.

The Moderne is a small pen, although it fits my big hands in that the blind cap rests on that little hinge of flesh between your forefinger and thumb, I am sure it has a better scientific name but you have all looked down at the spot that I mean so I hope that I have got my point across.

When I look at an old pen I try and imagine its history could have been. This pen would not have been an expensive pen when new, perhaps the cheapest Parker in the display cabinet and therefore not chosen by a social climber who wanted to impress at the office, it may have been a first school pen, I will settle for that. A Christmas gift for someone just starting Big school.

The condition of the pen suggests that it actually didn’t suit them too well, perhaps they wanted something more colourful. The pen has not seen much use, the imprints are nice and clear, there is no brassing on the clip, no scratches anywhere on the pen and the nib is like new. An original nib on an 84 year old nib that is perfect is a nice find.

I have owned the pen about 10 years, I bought it at the same time as a Junior Duofold which is just a little older, much smarter and more substantial, but I like the Moderne which is a world away from the Parker 51 and yet only a few short years separates the two. The Moderne and the 51 couldn’t be more different from the filling system, the cap design and the way that the nib works, giving flex and style. This pen is the biplane to the jet age 51.

Haven't tried that one yet, thanks for the heads up. Was thinking of trying Grape too. I have a couple other Purple samples in the queue to try out.

Meanwhile, I've been using my Golden Pearl Vacumatic all day after further reshaping the nib closer to F. It came to me worn flat and writing like a B.

I've been using my long-neglected Wahl-Eversharp Equipoise in Tunis Pearl celluloid with EF flex nib. I filled it with Montblanc bordeaux ink from the old 50ml bottle.

I'm going to cheat and use Syd's online image of an Equipoise in Tunis Pearl. I think it is one of the prettiest celluloids.

Still rocking my newly-received Sheaffer Targa (14k M), with Waterman Serenity Blue

Yesterday, I was not loving the nib on my Clairefontaine notebook. It felt too spidery. But I switched over this morning to a Moleskine Cahier, a notebook I usually reserve for pencils and felt tips like the Paper Mate Flair and Sharpie Pen. (I prefer this paper for writing, but it sucks for the vast majority of FP and RB inks I have tried -- and even some gels.)

Two pages in, and the Targa is an absolute joy to use. Natch. The lines are a smidgeon thicker, and the nib slides across the paper with a delicious smooth feedbacky feel.

Two things which I do not appreciate quite in proportion to their reputation.

The Parker 51 has never really caught on with me, although I've tried different versions. I just emptied and flushed out a different one which had the nib reground as a stub, another thing that has never caught on with me.

Okay, make that three things.

Anyway, this one, an aerometric with an ordinary medium-ish nib, writes quite nicely and reliably, I must admit. I've filled it with De Atramentis Document Blue, and will not flush it out until it runs dry. But I may not refill it for some time.

And the other thing is the book, although I suppose I finally shall get through it this time. I've lost patience with it on previous attempts. I know it's a literary classic, I understand that it's satire, and crude humor doesn't bother me. It's more the casual cruelty that I don't care for. I'm finding, though, that if one can get past that, there is much of interest, at least as an insight into a different age and different ways of thinking.

I happen to have pens inked up with the first four bottled inks I ever got.

Opus 88 Demonstrator (F), Pilot Iroshizuku Asa-Gao
Twsbi Vac 700r (F), Pilot Iroshizuku Shin-Ryoku
Lamy 2000 (EF), Noodler's Ink Dark Matter
Noodler's Ink Charlie (M/F), Noodler's Ink Manjiro Nakahama Whaleman's Sepia

A beautiful blue, happy green, startling black, and serene sepia.

I used almost all of these pens today, all inked, to write letters, postcards and Christmas cards. The smaller rack on the right has pens for Christmas cards, with three Pelikans with B cursive italic nibs and filled with shimmer inks, and a Sheaffer Nostalgia stub filled with Penman Sapphire to defeat envelopes that aren't fountain pen ink friendly.

Mostly the "fligher" Wing Sung 601. Also ran were the Lamy Vista, Lamy Al-Star, and the fligher vintage Parker 45 BP with black Parker gel refill.

A fairly key Vac. Blue Diamond with the striped section is something you don't see every day. Gee, might as well be Burgundy to put it over the top! 1939?

Green 1996 Sheaffer Holly set. A green Touchdown set with Holly caps and box. I saw a pen like this, green Touchdown offered and made my own set. Working on burgundy too.

I never did find mine, and that was 15 years ago. I'm tempted to replace it...one of these days.

Soennecken 111 Superior in light tortoise. Now fully restored by Brad Torelli. Got to watch the whole filler restoration in person and learned a bunch about the tricky nature of working with these pens. I wish I had taken a picture of the click piston mechanism in action; it is incredible.

That is a beautiful pen :)

Thanks! It is of course more stunning to behold in person. Both the 111s I've owned have celluloid and a hand-feel that feels somehow a cut above other celluloid pens I've handled (OMAS, Montblanc 14X, Parker Vacumatic etc. )
