I've been using my new rollerball a lot. I am a little worried about this. But the new Visconti broad sepia refill I've put in writes really nicely.

In my defence, I am using up a mead 5*notebook, and this is the only ink it will take. The other results are hilarious.

Today's Pen Selection .. Though, I think I am going to load my Monteverde Impressa with the Private Reserve American Blue (Fast Dry) and use that as the 3rd pen in my 3 pen pouch .. replacing my Jinhao 159 with Waterman's Absolute Brown.

I got the fast dry because I am a Lefty and I wanted to test it against the Pilot Iroshizuku (currently Ku-jaku). In my testing with my EF NIB, even though it is NOT listed as fast drying, the Pilot ink is 95%+ dry and not smear-able in 5 seconds or less on premium paper (HP 32lbs Laser Jet and Rhodia). This is VERY workable for me!

Nothing fancy, today, in terms of Fountain pens (inks, may be more interesting):
A black Kaweco Sport in M, with P.W. Akkerman 28 Hofkwartier Green,
an anthracite Lamy Safari in EF with Noodler's Liberty Elysium
and a TWSBI Mini Classic with Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-Peki (This ink is really great, but it looks much better out of a Noodler's Flex: Very little shading with the TWSBI EF nib)

Waterman 52, Jinhao 159, Detroit Penworks on this one:

A while back, I went on an H.L. Mencken reading binge. In one of his essays, he mentioned school teachers demonstrating penmanship (he's writing about his own childhood in the late 1800s), and how they would try to get the students interested by demonstrating "birds" on the blackboard. I think that your birds help me understand what he was talking about. By the time I got to elementary school in the 1960s, the teachers could show us how to write a serviceable cursive, but they didn't do anything fancy.

Working today with a Delta Serena RedPearl Italian Edition with gunmetal hardware (steel F) using Pelikan Edelstein Garnet.

How do you like the Serena? I have been debating about it. Would you recommend it?

Very pleased with it. The steel nib has no flex or spring to it but writes very well with minimal pressure. The resin is absolutely beautiful with a glowing & pearlescent look to it. The dark rhodium trim is actually a little lighter than the photocopy shows but the colour of the resin is very close. There is also a chrome version available but I thought the gunmetal compliments the red pearl better.
The pen is well balanced and comfortable to hold. Uses a converter.

I bought it on eBay from MarteModenaUSA in Italy in an auction rather than BIN for just over $100USD including shipping.

Today's work pen is the Visconti 20th Anniversary Ragtime (14K-M) with Diamine Steel Blue.
A great pen to write with but a bloody bastard to refill or clean with its stupid, stupid, stupid captive converter.
I've been so tempted to try and separate the section from the body to use the converter rather than via the blind cap but too chicken to do so due to the cost of the pen.

It gives you an idea why the pen is heavier than expected for one this size with all the metal parts it has.
You can see Visconti used one of their metal converters not the plastic one and there are threads for the section to join the body. I think the Divinas & recall reading the Delta Journal have the same sort of arrangement.

I used this Levenger L-Tech as I ground the nib into an Architect nib. This is heading to our own sdcurnow.

Please explain the grind. From the writing sample it looks like it does the opposite to an italic so thin on verticals and wide on horizontals, if that right?

You've got it! That's exactly right.

Regular stubs act like architect points for me, due to how I write/rotate.

I have in iccasion posted photos here of pens whose only use that day was to pose for the 'pens I have used today' picture.

I've been meaning to do a review but just haven't had the time. I love mine now -- it carries at least 80% of my FP use these days. But there were some issues getting it right. I bought it with a fine titanium nib and a steel stub. The stub was wonderful straight out of the box, but the fine had a hard time starting on many papers with many inks -- baby bottom? Not sure. But the replacement has been perfect. Then the internal rod developed a fault: a ring around it was suddenly gouged out of the metal (like it suddenly corroded or was abraded off). It was startling and I immediately sent Conid photos. They sent a replacement (easy to install) and eventually even emailed me with the conclusion from their forensic analysis of the original rod that I sent back to them: that particular rod had a materials defect they had never seen before and that no other rods in their current supply has. To their credit Werner and Francis have been really responsive and have stood behind their pen and I am 100% satisfied with it now.

Ink filling is so easy; the titanium nib has just the right give to it. Overall the pen is the perfect size for my hands. If I'm concentrating on what I'm writing it gets out of the way completely -- and if I want to enjoy the pen itself, that is possible too. The ink capacity is good if you need / want that. The ability to seal the ink off from the nib for flights is nice if you fly with your pens as I occasionally do. If you're OCD about barrel staining, then perhaps don't get a demonstrator model. Many inks leave a residue that can take some work to clean out completely. (I quickly gave up trying to keep the cap and barrel pristine -- stains are "badges of honor" or "beauty marks".) On the plus side, the whole pen can easily be disassembled, so thorough cleaning of every nook and cranny is possible if one is so inclined.

Those were some of the reviews that tempted me into purchasing mine. More thorough than others out there. Well worth watching both. I was initially disappointed that I was too late to get the original Flat-top, but now I'm fully happy with the streamline. Mine did need a light addition of silicon grease to the piston, as in the streamline video review.

Some thoughts:

Some time I need to find out where that "Jentle" word comes from.
The Shigure is a dark purple; the Doyou is a dark brown. The colors are quite easy to distinguish on my end, but the photo is showing little if any difference.
Fisher Space Pens are nice, practical little take anywhere pens, very reliable. But the fountain pen inks make the ballpoint look rather pathetic.

The Catalpa was the name of the ship sent to rescue the Irish prisoners from Fremantle Prison. "Replica ink of a 19th century whaler's Sea Snail Sepia sourced from Australian waters by Whalemen. A security ink that turns to an emerald green when treated with common bleach. A whaling voyage that set out not for the whale, but to rescue sons of Eire - from New Bedford, Massachusetts to Fremantle, Western Australia - & to Ireland". The colour of Cthulhu spit (if he did) - almost a greyer version of Zhivago.

Today the focus is on the Namiki Falcon, SM nib, with Sailor Jentle Tokiwa-Matsu, and a Pilot Custom Heritage 91, FM nib, Pilot Iroshizuku Murasaki-Shikibu. In other words, green and purple inks. And because I always have at least one ballpoint, today it's a Parker 45 cap actuated one with a Monteverde gel refill.

Your Bexley 58 frankenpen has such a clean looking nib and those hairlines a whisper thin.

Today's work pen is the black Lamy Safari (1.1 italic). The ink could be Noodler's Coral Sea or maybe Sailor Yama-dori due to the sheen.

On a whim, I took out the cheapest new fountain pen I ever got, this Wing Sung 322, which was a $1.75 add-on on a much larger order some 3 or 4 years ago. Filled it up with my cheapest ink (Hero Blue-Black), wrote with it for a couple of days, emptied it out and put it away. This picture was taken two days ago.

http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/tt221/mapn/Pens/29a6c157-9102-4a67-8012-fbd0f5aabd70_zps0a868fbf.jpg (http://s614.photobucket.com/user/mapn/media/Pens/29a6c157-9102-4a67-8012-fbd0f5aabd70_zps0a868fbf.jpg.html)

Really not bad. It's ugly, and looking at it through a loupe, the nib slit is noticeably off center, but it's acceptably smooth (just a little tooth, but it's a very fine nib), holds a reasonable amount of ink, and doesn't leak. There's no reason to use it now, with all the better pens that I've got, but every now and then I break out one of these cheapies just for the heck of it.

I'm just using this one at home, although it's actually reliable enough that I could take it around with me. There's that recent thread about the most expensive pen you would use for everyday carry. For myself, I will carry my most expensive pens, but I do give a break to some of the really old antiques.

http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/tt221/mapn/Pens/DSCF0527_zps7bb1e18b.jpg (http://s614.photobucket.com/user/mapn/media/Pens/DSCF0527_zps7bb1e18b.jpg.html)

This one was actually pretty inexpensive for a vintage Conklin Crescent; I picked it up along with a BCHR Moore, $30 for the pair. They both needed new sacs of course. The Moore also needed a new J-Bar, and has a little bit of an ink-burping problem, but that's another story. The clip on the Conklin's cap was a broken off nub which I've covered with the accommodation clip that you see (taken from another Conklin). The cap and the barrel material seem not to match, although they go together well enough.

On the other hand, this pen is quite a reliable writer, and the #2 nib probably has as much flex as any of my other vintage gold nibs. It's not what I imagine a wet noodle to be, but then, as you can see, my handwriting skills would not do justice to a true wet noodle. It does flex quite easily, even a little bit without conscious pressure. It won't replace my modern Pilots for daily carry, but I do get a kick out of using pens like this for my journal.

Used this today, arrived late yesterday. I've wanted a Koi for a very long time but took forever to find one at a price I was willing to pay. Has a fine (EF?) nib, way finer than I'd have ever chosen. But actually works well with the tiny A6 Hobonichi as a journaling nib. So, we'll see, still don't really *like* fine nibs but love the pen.

I had gotten down to four inked pens as I promised myself I would, but I wanted to try Sailor Jentle Oku-Yama ink in a somewhat broad, wet writing pen. So it's back to five with the top pen here, a Haolilai 801F, really an excellent pen, but just a bit below my best ones, and it writes a little wider than I like most of the time. The 14k nib is supposed to be medium, but I'd call it a bit broader than that.

I also have the "master" version of this nib, a 9284, but the tipping is worn away in such a manner as to make it unusable. It almost looks like a bungled attempt at nib grinding. This one:
http://www.amazon.com/Spencerian-Penmanship-Theory-Book-copybooks/dp/088062096X/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1417589640&sr=8-3&keywords=spencerian+penmanship

At the time I learned, I didn't want to learn spencerian so much, I only wanted to improve my penmanship. I tossed out letters I didn't like, and made whatever crazy flourishes I wanted. Now that I have indeed improved my penmanship I might go back and relearn proper spencerian.
