Brando090, your box has very attractive wood in it. The drawer would be handy as well.

KrazyIvan, wow I didn't realise how well co-ordinated all yours were. I really like that almost black staining on the wood.

793

Here is the top of the Tiger Myrtle box which used to hold Safaris and Al-Stars, now sadly too small unless I split them up.
Currently using a bigger Bird'sEye Huon Pine Box which has noticably darkened since purchasing it in March2012.

Here's mine... The ink selection has changed a bit since these pics were taken. Drawers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 10 plus most of the base hold repair tools and bits plus cleaning supplies, cartridges and leads, and other ephemera with 5-9 holding pens. The drawers are lined with inserts from GoPens.com (https://www.gopens.com/Vintage_Pen_Parts/vintage_pens_12X16Trays.php) cut in half to 6" depths to fit the drawers. I think I can hold about 150 pens in the lined drawers at the moment.

Thanks guys! I've been collecting since the early '90s and finally got to the point I couldn't stand everything being spread out in miscellaneous small boxes and piled on my desk and dresser. I shopped for quite a while and splurged a bit, but couldn't be happier. I originally wanted a vintage Gerstner case, but they were way out of my price range as were the new Gerstner USA cases. I finally settled on the Gerstner International case and base above. Their International line is still designed by Gerstner but mass produced overseas rather than handmade here, and thus a good bit less expensive.

The cases above are a Gerstner International GI-532 Large Case and B532 Base (http://www.gerstner-international.com/STYLEgi-532-b532.htm) that I found from an online retailer for quite a bit below list price. I then purchased several 12"x16" Slotted Display Tray Liners from GoPens.com (https://www.gopens.com/Vintage_Pen_Parts/vintage_pens_12X16Trays.php) which I cut to 6" depths to fit the drawers. I simply laid the trays in the drawers without gluing them so I can reconfigure the drawers over time and find that the felt bottoms of the drawers keep the trays from sliding even during travel.

So far this solution has worked out perfectly. The top area is deep enough for all but the tallest ink bottles and keeps my inks safely away from the sunlight in the room. The two deep drawers at the top corners of the case are perfect for ear bulbs, syringes, and all my miscellaneous repair supplies and small tools. The ability to close the case up and lock it makes it easy to take to our local pen meet-ups. I no longer have to pick and choose what items I want to take.

I found a case that looks similar. Doubt it would be the same quality but for pen storage, it should not be bad. For $80 USD it is also not a bad price. A Harbor Freight is being built close to my workplace so I should be able to see it in person soon.

Yep, the Harbor Freight cases are modeled after the Gerstners and offer pretty good value for the money. They are a bit more cheaply constructed and the drawer bottoms are a bit thin and flimsy. Just make sure you get a good look at the exact one you're taking home as their quality control can vary quite a bit from unit to unit. I do like the integral drawer dividers though.

Congrats,

The Gerstner was one of my first pen cases i thought about buying, and after alot of looking, i backtracked back to the drawerd chest shown above, which ill be doing a review of soon enough. I also wanted a vintage box from Gerstner, but fearing the cleaning and the potential for a money pit, i looks elsewhere.

Nice, Jeepguy! I have a slew of old cigar boxes that seemed too nice to throw away, but I couldn't think of anything I could do with them. I will order some of those slotted display trays and fit them into my old cigar boxes. I like the idea of using a machinist tool chest, because as you noted, you have space to store everything in one place. I have seen those tool chests at Harbor Freight Tools, who are usually the least of anywhere for such things.

This one is only $80.

I might buy one myself.

Nice conversions. I make custom boxes and do pen conversions from anything I can get my hands on from cigar boxes to old jewlery chests. I do the interriors with felts, leather or flocking. I was hand making my pen separators until I finally broke down and had my own line of flocked trays made...which I sell by they way if anyone is interested. You can see some of my projects and sale items at www.PendoraPens.com

Anyone who is converting their own box and wants a trimmable tray insert thats 8 x21 x .25 (will yield 2-3 drawers or cigar boxes) let me know. email: pendora@usa.com

Nice work. I used to buy alot of Garys pen inserts but since they were too narrow for alot of my pens I went into production mode and had my own made to accommodate 3/4 inch pens. Unfortunately with any production run you have to buy things in the 1000's..... so if you want one of those drawers for larger pens let me know.

Again...nice work.

I did stop in my local store and saw one on display. The display unit had been abused, or it damages easily. Heavily scratched on one side and dinged all over. The drawers didn't seem to fit well, not smooth to open/close. The picture is much better than the reality I saw. Someone suggested seeing the actual one you get since quality varies. I was curious, not looking to buy, so didn't ask to see other stock. It was only $80 so if I was interested I would have asked to see the stock and might get it if I didn't plan to travel with it.

Haha, thanks. So what do i win? (Montblanc? Pelikan? Omas? Um, TWSBI?...)

i'm not totally unaware of the fact that with the money i SPENT on those pizzas i probably could've just bought a really fancy glass-topped display case. (Made from zebrawood or something. 24kt hinges. MOP inlay. What-have-you.) But ... sigh ... i chose to eat instead. So it goes. So it goes.

i'd also like to add: many of those pizzas were eaten while watching FPGeeks podcasts. :P (Yes, i get pizza to watch a pen podcast. Yes, i'm probably lame. And yes, i'm pretty sure i'm not the only one who waits all week for these things, and makes an Event out of it.)

Do the boxes still have a strong pizza smell ? And have any of the pens picked it up.

My Parker Vacuumatics have a slight mothball smell.

I recall seeing some mechanical pencils make from the wood of malt whiskey barrels
a few years back.

Naw, no smell that i'm aware of. (If you're familiar with Little Caes@r's $5 pizzas, they aren't exactly the kind that'll explode toppings all inside the box, frankly. You're lucky half the time if there's enough cheese to even RUN.) Would having a pen that smells like a pizza really be THAT bad, tho? C'mon.

i also have a jewellery box that i bought off eBay (also housing a few vacs, actually) and every time i open it my room suddenly smells like somebody's grandmother. It's one of the most pleasant and comforting sensations imaginable. i actually HOPE that it eventually transfers to my pens.

So yesterday I went to Specs armed with a vial to see whether some of the other cigar boxes they have available are deep enough to hold ink vials (they're not) and instead I was distracted by the 2 cigar boxes I ended up purchasing (they still had the plastic dividers).

KrazyIvan suggested I post up photos of my ink storage so I took all of these photos this morning. Apologies in advance for the quality of the photos, this digital P&S camera is 6+ years old (on a side note, if someone can recommend a good digital camera that won't break the bank I'd love suggestions).

1700

Inside of the cigar box by BamaPens. The photos really do not do this justice. Rotating pens currently which is why it is empty

First (full) ink vial container

1704
Inside... see I told you it was full

1705
Close up of the dividers... A little time, plastic canvas sheet and x-acto knife and ta-da

1706
Inside of the second box - have plenty of space for more vials

1707
The first cigar box that beckoned to me yesterday. Love the fact that I can see what is in there. Pens in there for photo taking only.

1708
Inside of the first box. I need to figure out how to line or do something with the inside of the box.

1709
The other box. All of these boxes (minus the one from BamaPens) are Drew Estate boxes (coincidence really) and this was the first one I ripped the label off.

I think I have enough space for all of my pens (still have some that aren't photographed here).

It would depend on the type of pizza some smell much nicer than others. It would probably make you hungry each time you pick up the pen.

BikerBabe, that is a wonderfully eclectic range of pen storage and gratifying to see I'm not the only one who piles pens into boxes (breed 'em tough I say).
The marble type pattern under the lid of the last box looks fantastic.

The stand for displaying your dip pens looks a real antique.
Was it originally designed for pens something else like cross-bow bolts ?

The box itself has got that marble type pattern, it's italian alabaster, I found it at a local thrift shop:

The dip pen rack is originally a pen rack for office use, according to my mother.
The lady is 84, and learned how to use at first a chalkboard tablet, then pencil and finally a dip pen at school, before she got old enough to get a fountain pen of her own at her confirmation and baptising in 1943.
I have that pen, a Matador button filler as far as I remember, and I'll have it restored to full writing condition some day soon, once I get that cap for my red Duofold, and a clip replacemement for my Sailor 1911 (- it's currently somewhere in Japan right now...) :)

All: Thank you for your comments and kind words. :)

BikerBabe, the italian alabaster box has so much character, the simple design on the side is very attractive. Have to tell Mrs Bogon to look out for one when she is in the trift shops looking for wool & knitting stuff.

My mother used to have a few dip pens I must ask her this week if she still has them.

Hi,

I've been in the hobby... a long time ;)

The case is full, 2200 or so pens and related pencils, dating mostly 1915-1955. And that's but a fraction of the pens lying about, counting sales stock for the Vacumania website. The "Jade" pens are 1920's and 1930's green celluloid, a color the companies indeed called... "Jade".

i'd also like to add: many of those pizzas were eaten while watching FPGeeks podcasts. :P (Yes, i get pizza to watch a pen podcast. Yes, i'm probably lame. And yes, i'm pretty sure i'm not the only one who waits all week for these things, and makes an Event out of it.)

Hi inBOIL, you are not alone.

Every Sunday, I enjoy a bruch laid out on the coffee table with my laptop playing the Geeks' podcast from the night before (I'm on Australia time). I also save my favourite episodes and play them in a marathon when I have a big stack of shirts to iron - A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, so to speak. :tea:

Love the Industrial Cabinet, Brando

Thank you very much,

Since getting it, I've cleaned it vigorously and have interested some custom felt pen inserts by BamaPens. Strangely, I'm 90% filled up. I need to sell my more unique pens that I don't use as often.

Well, i'll share mine, then--since it's certainly NOT what anyone would call Serious. (i personally call it a Working Man's pen cabinet.)

Pardon the cruddy point-n-shoot photos.

(And yes: i know i have 2 copies of Jailbird, for some reason.)

Let's just say I'm associated with this company, and I definitely like your take on the brand. I've never seen the wings in cardboard boxes though...

Caribbean_Skye: Thanks. :)

Fountainpenkid: Well...I started with the red box with pens, then the brown "leather" box followed, then the brown wooden one, etc. :D

I also really like this box, though I thought it was burl when I first saw it. What are the dimensions?

Hi guys.

Today I think I finally found a solution that I'm happy about, when it comes to storing my pens.
I found some nice three-layer plastic boxes, and I promptly bought four three-layer boxes when I found out that they fitted a modern average fp nicely. :)

3058

There's some nice little ridges inside which fits nicely with pens, at least temporarily:

3059

I'm planning to buy some fp tray insert thingies next month, depending on how many bills I've got to pay. :D
But this works nicely for now, and I'm happy about it. :)

Here's one box, trays taken apart:

3060

So now all I need to do is to sort the pens alphabetically again, get those inserts, and find a way to index the boxes. :)

Hi there. :)

Outside measurements:
Height: 5,8 cm = 2.28 inches.
Width: 13,5 cm = 5.31 inches.
Depth: 9,5 cm = 3.74 inches.
