HisNibs.com update -- Eleanor Roosevelt and the handwritten thank you note

Greetings all,

At the beginning of the month there was a discussion thread on Pentrace
members2.boardhost.com/pentrace/msg/1412042814.html about famous individuals
that hadn't yet received a pen design in their honor. Two of the many
suggestions were the crew of Apollo 11 (or just Neil Armstrong alone), as
well as Eleanor Roosevelt. I weighed in on both -- but with a certain
personal connection to the latter!

Sometimes a customer email or two reminds me of what's on the website! In
the case of two that I received yesterday, it's the Jinhao Tiger overlay and
the Monteverde and Conklin nibs (although I didn't really need a reminder of
those, as quite a few sold this week).

...and let's not forget the Dollar brand piston-filler!

As this newsletter goes out to a mailing list of thousands of customers,
please understand if there's a delay in answering your email queries or
orders after one of these is sent. We will respond in order received and as
soon as possible!

I don't write personal entries that often in this fountain pen newsletter,
but since this involves a question about individuals deserving of a limited
edition fountain pen designed in their honor -- and a handwritten note -- I
guess I'll let myself slide.

See, there was this time when my mother was 13 and invited to have tea at
the White House with the First Lady...

Please click here http://hisnibs.blogspot.com/ if you'd like to know the
'rest of the story'! It's the October 12th entry.

With the number of pen models on the HisNibs website, it's easy lose track
of them -- even for me! So, I was happily reminded of the Tiger overlay by
an email I received today from a terrific, long-time customer.

"Hi Norman, I have some free time and I wanted to tell you of a gratifying
experience I recently had. Even when I buy several pens at the same time
usually they don't stay unused for very long, since as you know we fountain
pen aficionados like to try out our pens as soon as they come into our
hands. However, for some reason or another, as I was finding a place for my
latest acquisitions (a Jinhao Blue Plasma http://hisnibs.com/Plasma.htm and
a Duke Gold Rings http://hisnibs.com/golden_rings.htm I noticed that my
Jinhao Black Tiger was sitting inside its box utterly untried. So I
proceeded to fill her with Private Reserve DC Super Violet
http://hisnibs.com/ink.htm and tested her out -- boy, what a surprise. As
you know I own several very expensive Japanese and European fountain pens
(as well as some fantastic vintage Parkers and Sheaffers, and some priceless
Costa Rican pens hand made with native precious woods), worth some 100 times
or more what I paid for the Black Tiger, but I can honestly say none of them
writes better than this Jinhao pen -- maybe a couple write AS well, but I
find it hard to believe that any pen could possibly write any better. This
pen glides smooth as silk, with absolutely perfect strokes, impeccably
uniform lines in every which direction, and with incredibly regular ink
flow. Jinhao pens as a rule are very high quality (I love all of mine), but
this one is simply exceptional. I know nibs of course vary in large or
incredibly subtle ways (as everything else in the universe) -- no two nibs
are exactly alike, no matter the brand or make. But even so, I am very
surprised at the surpassing perfection of this nib. Just wanted to let you
know. Oh, and thank so much for very many pleasurable moments with some of
the finest (and most inexpensive) pens on the market today. Mind you --
inexpensive, certainly not cheap. Warm regards,"
M. A., Costa Rica

We gotcha nibs right here!

The 'reminder' email I received yesterday:

"Good afternoon, Norman. Thank you very much for the nib, which arrived just
yesterday. The note with instructions was most helpful, and I am now
enjoying the nib. I'm very grateful for the prompt and gracious service. All
best wishes,"
C. M., Bristol, TN

Ever since introducing the Monteverde and Conklin stubs nibs several years
ago (I've written about introducing stub nibs to the companies elsewhere),
I've carried those in silver and black -- as well as F, M & B for Monteverde
and F & M for Conklin) for sale separately as well as on their pens
($24.00). These are #6 size nibs and fit a number of Jinhao models
perfectly, such as the Desert Sands http://hisnibs.com/desert_sands.htm,
Dragon's Offspring http://hisnibs.com/dragon_offspring.htm, Black
Dreadnaught http://hisnibs.com/dreadnaught.htm, Ivory
http://hisnibs.com/ivory.htm, Pearl Windows
http://hisnibs.com/pearl_windows.htm, Plasma http://hisnibs.com/Plasma.htm,
Silver Chain Dragon (http://hisnibs.com/silver_chain.htm, Snakeskin
http://hisnibs.com/snakeskin.htm, Starry Night
http://hisnibs.com/starry_night.htm, White Spatter
http://hisnibs.com/white_spatter.htm and Wooden Chariot
http://hisnibs.com/wooden_chariot.htm. Rather than $24.00, if any of these
nibs are requested to replace the Jinhao nib at the time of purchase, then
they add only $20.00 to the base-price of the pen.

"Hi Norman, just letting you know that I got your package on Friday, and was
relieved that the new nib and feed pulled easily from the nib
housing...Finally installed the stub last night. I used it at work today,
and was impressed. I really like this nib! If I hit the sweet spot (easy
to do, the nib is quite forgiving), it's very smooth yet expressive. For an
inexpensive nib, it writes very well, and is smoother than
nib-meister-ground stubs I have. :-) Thanks for selling this nib, and for
your emails. Hopefully I can pick up a Napa from you before the end of the
year. I liked the blue, but the red I saw in the review was stunning...I
should mention that the stub really is great for the price--I can't think of
anything else in its price range that's as good. I like that it's a
full-sized nib, not small and stiff like a Lamy 1.1. Also, the Monteverde
stub feels more expressive than, say, a Jowo nib. It's too bad I don't like
the stiff, bland Jowo nibs, because so many pens use them now. After I
increased the ink flow, the Monteverde stub brings out a lot of color in the
inks I've used. :-)"
G. F., Kaneohe, HI

"Thank you so much for sending out the nib so quickly! I love it SO much!
Many folks at work have commented on the look...it's a dream to write with!
Also, the personal letter with wax seal were nice touches!"
A. C., Elyria, OH

...and let's not forget:

"Hi His Nibs...Thank you . I am really surprised by how consistent of a
writer the Dollar i717 is for how fine the nib is on such an inexpensive
pen. I wanted to send my appreciation for your stellar service and fast
shipping. I hope to return again as I continue to add to my FP collection."
J. D., Riverside, CA

"Got my dollar pens and inked on last night. I've spent the day writing with
it exclusively. Whether it is your inspection/adjustment or serendipity,
this is one the smoothest writing (fine) pens in my collection and
definitely the smoothest with this fine a point for the money. I set aside
my favorite office pen for the dollar today. Thanks for the quick turnaround
and great product."
K. M., West Columbia, SC

"Just to let you know the "Dollar -- See it all" pen arrived in what seems
record time. It fills easily, writes smoothly, and finely enough to please
me. What's more, a bargain. Thanks again Norman."
M. B., Toronto, Canada
