Here's a quick, besotted review (http://www.leighreyes.com/?p=4839). Nothing impartial here or anything like that.

That is gorgeous. I wasn't aware of the heki-tamenuri variation of urushi - I have an aka-tamenuri pen, which I imagine is more common - but it's superb.

As for the dorsal fin... It's what the Waterman Serenite could have been if it had been born with wabi-sabi in the DNA :-)

The pen may be mightier than the sword, but that doesn't mean it can't look like one!

I love the shape and can totally appreciate the amount of work in making those dorsal fins, but I'd probably go bonkers from aligning the cap all the time.

Tony that's exactly why I have avoided certain pens. I'd have the same issue as you!

With the Dorsal Fin 2, the Decapod and Twist Decapod, and on maki-e pens where the designs must align, there is only one correct thread entry. So it is easy enough. [emoji4]

Leigh, you gotta post that pic that shows your other, the matte black one. That pen is so beyond belief, I don't know what to do! It's all personal aesthetics, but when I saw the photo of the two of them on FB, my eyes immediately jumped to that other. Wow.

Good to know Leigh. It's the one thing that drives me insane about my Edison, getting the material to line up cap and body is almost impossible.

Oh dear. I was able to try out the dorsal fin pens in Mora Stylos today. Then I tried out the Nakaya Music Nib that belonged to one of their decapods. Oh dear. Smitten.

But it is still one correct out of four, right?

Yep! Once you know the position though - like with my Decapod it is clip up, nib down - then it works every time. :)

Cheers. It's minor really, certainly it won't detract me from the models you mentioned. My periscope is up for the second Nakaya. I've got a gloss briar for quick jots on the go, so I might go for something more desk bound. Your blog was most helpful, thanks!

It's interesting to see the heki Neo Standard and the Dorsal Fin next to one another. The Neo Standard is so much darker and the green under layer is more turquoise looking. The Dorsal Fin is much lighter and earthier and the under layer looks more yellow-green.

I have two shiro-tamenuri pens that are quite different like that. It's interesting, though, that my older shiro pen is much, much darker--almost black-brown--while the newer pen is lighter and closer to the color of crème brûlée.

That kind of color variance is one of the reasons for my love for Nakaya. It's an easily visible symbol of their handmadeness and artisanship.

Thanks for posting, Leigh. Your collection is an inspiration.

Leigh, how do you carry your Nakayas? Case, wrap, etc?

Good question. The DF2, especially, doesn't look very pen case-friendly. Gawgeous, though.
