I am a lucky fellow, with kind friends, one of which gave me a splendidly thoughtful Christmas Gift: "Adventures in Stationery" by James Ward, published by Profile Books ISBN: 978 1 84668 615 3.

Mr Ward is undoubtedly a dyed-in-the-wool enthusiast if one judges by his very well-researched book. Chapter one reveals the pleasure he experienced in finding new in its box, a Velos 1377 desk tidy...

There is not a great deal for the fountain pen maniac, but of course the book is not specifically aimed at these. Instead there is coverage of the desk tidy, the history of paperclips, paper, staplers filing and ball points plus numerous other stationery items. Fountain pens are mentioned of course with a summary of some significant historical facts.

The writer has an attractive, easy style (albeit with rather too much fondness for split infinitives) and there is a pleasant seasoning of humour, lightly done, throughout the book, together with a decent dose of nostalgia.

Heartily recommended.
