Help: Identify a maybe american or english Parker 51.
Hello.
I'm wrinting from Brazil.
I brought a Parker 51. Medium nib.
The cap is the transitional cap, with long clip. No halo logo from Parker, only: "Parker". in th other side: "51"1/10 12 ct R GOLD.
In the barrel no inscription. I think someone in the past polished the barrel. The color is plum, I think.
The filler inscriptions:
PARKER "51"
TO FILL PRESS RIBBED BAR
FIRMLY 4 TIMES
USE DRY WRITING
SUPERCHROME INK
HOLDING PEN FRONT
DOWN, WIPE POINT
WITH SOFT TISSUE
THE PARKER PEN CO.
MADE IN U.S.A.
The problems I see: thinking the cap is english. Long clip: only 1948/49. The filler is american, but 4 times (in stainless steel, since 1950) The color, if is plum, only in 1948/49 according http://parker51.com/.
I know that English Parkers 51 sometimes have mixed parts.
I don't know if I have a frankenpen or a english mixed parts pen.
Someone can help me?

It looks like a regular US Parker 51 plum and no-one would call it a frankenpen.

Thanks for your reply,
But remains a problem. The color and the cap are from 1948/49, the filler must be 6 times, but is 4 times and in stainless.

I don't know that model. I only have a Parker 75, and the filler for mine is removable and meant to replace a cartridge. In fact I bought it separately when I got the pen. It has nothing to do with the pen as such. Perhaps it's the same with your model.

Interesting about the filler since my date coded 1948 Aerometric's filler has the same wording and design as yours.
I don't recall the details on dating the filler though. What is your source for that?
And of course I have no idea the provenance of my pen. I picked it up from an antique store without any accompanying box.

51s have integral fillers.
As for the mystery, i’m going to say it’s not plum but burgundy. The plum colour is barely noticeable except under the brightest light. If it looks plum, it ain’t. (At least under normal lighting.)

Re: Help: Identify a maybe american or english Parker 51.
Good evening from the UK.
First of all you are correct about the cap in that it is English but it could well date from a little later than you think. The sale of Parker 51 Aerometrics began in England in April 1950 according to David and Mark Shepherd in their book "Parker "51"". Production began in Newhaven before that date. English caps with the longer clip may be found on 51 Aerometric pens dating from some years into the 1950s.
Following-on from what guyy has said already in his post above, are you sure that the colour is Plum? It is always difficult to tell from photographs but I too think that it could be what guyy suggests, that is Burgundy (the USA version that is also known on this side of the Atlantic as Dark Burgundy). The reason for the different terms is that the shade of Burgundy used on English Parker 51 barrels was somewhat lighter and redder than the American (Dark) Burgundy although some English 51s may be found with Dark Burgundy barrels.
I attach in case they might help two images of Parker 51s showing from left to right:
1. 51 Cartridge/Converter in Dark Burgundy (USA 1958/59).
2. 51 Classic Aerometric in Plum (USA 1948). This pen has the Press 6 times inscription on the filler as you would expect.
3. 51 Classic Aerometric in Dark Burgundy (USA c.1955). This pen has the Press 4 times inscription.
4. 51 Rolled Silver in Burgundy (England c.1954).
The image showing the pens full-length was taken in artificial light and the other one was taken in the shade on a bright Summer day. Apart from the difference between the Plum and the Dark Burgundy examples on either side of it you can see also how much lighter the English Burgundy is when compared to the USA colour.
I hope that this helps .

The colour of your 51 shells is Dark Burgundy ( also known as American Brown )

Re: Help: Identify a maybe american or english Parker 51.
I have a 1950/51 Newhaven Aero which in natural light and inspected very very closely looks like a Plum
A '4 times' filler
I did test the shells for residue, they were Purple ( Plum ) not Burgundy or Dark Burgundy.
An image of it, taken using natural light with no photographic enhancement.

Not so sure the OP's pen is burgundy. Suggestion: take pic in bright sunlight, as I did in quoted pic. It is hard to show plum color without very good, white light.
Re: Help: Identify a maybe american or english Parker 51.
The finest colour balanced images I have ever seen of a P51 Aero Plum were shown here by Sheptonian
I have just looked at them again.
Both my pens mentioned are Burgundy, standard and dark.
The OP’s in Dark Burgundy.
Liked pajaro’s attached image, the Plum colour is clear to see.
