Corroded nib
Hello my friends,
Here is a Pilot that was left in a drawer for a long time. Apparently the ink has corroded the nib. Most of it was scraped off (with my driving license, ha!) but there still remains unsightly blotches.
I've tried a sonic bath and then rubbing with vinegar on a Q-tip, to no avail. Before I try anything more drastic maybe someone has suggestions. The nib says 14K.
Cheers!

Re: Corroded nib
Metal polish - Simichrome is good.

Re: Corroded nib
Deb,
Ha! Simichrome was on my list of things to try! Thanks.
I'll have to be care not to get it in the breather hole.
Will report back.

Re: Corroded nib
Cover the breather hole. A tiny bit of masking tape or packing tape will do.

Re: Corroded nib
Also, for small areas like this, the very tip of the Q-tip can be touched to the tip of the Simichrome tube and you will get just a tiny bit of polish. Use the Q as a little applicator brush and scrubber (lightly) and you can minimize mess and excess polish.

Re: Corroded nib
For areas you really don't want excess polish to get into, a Sunshine Cloth (or similar jewler's polishing cloth) works well. To get into really tight spots, you can use one with a bamboo skewer cut to the required shape.

Re: Corroded nib
The pen in the picture is a Platinum pocket pen not a Pilot pen. :)

Re: Corroded nib
Hello again my friends,
Chrissy: Wow, I'm embarrassed..you're right! Of course.
Wile: Doh. I never thought of a bamboo skewer - they are most excellent for poking around, hard, environmentally friendly and dirt cheap at the dollar store. I used a piece of thickish copper wire to get the hard deposits off, but fear I may have scratched up the nib excessively. Oh well.
Jon: Thanks for that - it was useful in getting just a little of the polish on the nib, as you say.
Deb: Yes! Nice and simple and it worked a treat, thanks!
Here's a close-up...looks bad up close but not to bad from far away - better than it looked before!
Moral of the story...look after your pens.
Incidentally, I took this pic with one of those dirt cheap 20x lenses...worked great...think I got it from Amazon a while back...compare it to the photo I originally took.

You did a good job. Enjoy your pen.

Re: Corroded nib
Thanks Deb. It is indeed a lovely pen to write with.

Re: Corroded nib
They look like nice pens but usually seem to come with EF nibs that I don't like. I'm old and find most EF nibs are too hard to balance on when I'm writing.
