On seeing this strip, I wanted to say, "why not use a fountain pen and choose your own ink?" In fact, I did say it in the comments when this strip appeared on the Go Comics site.
I generally prefer blue to black ink, but my contrary streak might kick in if I had to use blue. I might pick Iroshizuku Kon-Peki, which wouldn't be the blue they were thinking of.
By the way, I hope you didn't conclude too soon that the creator of this comic was semi-literate.
