Grail Ink for a Grail Pen
As the proud new owner of a Grail Pen--Sailor Black Velvet, I'm looking for the perfect ink match. I've tried Iroshizuku Yama-guri and it's too somber and woody. I'm looking for something like root beer to mirror the color of the pen. Two samples are in the mail: Robert Oster "Caffe Crema" and Akkerman "Dutch Masters #4 Hals Oud Bruin".
Suggestions welcome!
Re: Grail Ink for a Grail Pen
Caffe Creme is more white coffee than root beer.

Darn laptop monitors!
Re: Grail Ink for a Grail Pen
I quite like the Caffe Crema. Its certainly a darker brown than KWZ Honey, if that's any frame of reference, but certainly a close family member.
Edit: the review my Macchiato man https://macchiatoman.com/blog/2017/1...ink-caff-crema is a pretty accurate color sample imo.
Re: Grail Ink for a Grail Pen
What about J. Herbin Cafe des Iles?

Dear VertOlive,
gratulations to your Grail Pen!
As far as I see it from web images of root beer, You look for a dark reddish brown and medium to high saturation and some "noblesse".
How wet does the pen write?
Robert Oster's Caffe Crema should look nice from a wet writer. Otherwise it will look woody, too.
For more red and higher saturation I would say: Try Robert Oster's Maroon 1789.
The color of Sailor's Black Velvet reminds me to a well aged Vintage Port, as does my RO Maroon.
And it has that somehow special touch many dark Oster inks have...
Best wishes and enjoy the Sailor
Jens

Here are two I propose (and have offered to send samples). I'm currently using the Kobe in this same pen and it is a very good match, but the Grail Owner will make final determination:

Re: Grail Ink for a Grail Pen
I have a sample of R. Oster Caffé Crema to review and it is quite different to Jon's two colours. I agree with Fred that it's more like white coffee.
There are some reddish browns in this batch:

I just use plain ol' Waterman Havana Brown.
Re: Grail Ink for a Grail Pen
That Kobe #27 is a real pretty ink color!
Re: Grail Ink for a Grail Pen
I didn't even know about the Sailor Black Velvet. A very classy pen indeed.
To my eyes, I think Diamine Ancient Copper would match that pen nicely.

In my actual use (scanned, so the white balance is pretty accurate):

Re: Grail Ink for a Grail Pen
I think Ancient Copper can be close... or Diamine Brandy Dazzle if you want a bit of pizzazz :) ;)
Re: Grail Ink for a Grail Pen
I think Ancient Copper and Waterman Absolute Brown will be lighter than the pen.
Re: Grail Ink for a Grail Pen
ESSRI
It goes with everything

Thank you. I have Brandy Dazzle but won’t put it in the Sailor. I have “Designated Sacrificial Pens” for sparkle inks.

Great stuff anyway.

Re: Grail Ink for a Grail Pen
A grail ink would Kobe Nagasawa Ginza Golden Sepia but it was a LE. Nevertheless I would suggest Kobe Nagasawa n3, n16 and n52 :)
Re: Grail Ink for a Grail Pen
You might want to check some of these, some looks kinda close
