Question: Favorite pen for practicing broad-edge calligraphy?

I would love to take my pen to work and get in quick practice sessions when I've got a break. I'm not super impressed with the Pilot Parallel. It's not a bad pen, but the thin strokes are a touch too broad, in my opinion.

I don't really want to have a dip pen set up in my workspace...

I have a variety of pens set with italic nibs, ranging from .8mm to 1.5 that I use quite regularly. Today I have a TWSBI Precision fitted with a 1.1 mm and it does well. I recently lettered some certificates for my school and used a Jinhao X750 fitted with a Goulet 1.5 mm nib. I regularly have a Lamy Safari with a 1.5 mm nib in my briefcase for just such occasion as well. I don't bring my Scheaffer calligraphy pens or Pilot Parallels with me very often, unless I have a dedicated lettering project to work on during my prep time.

How do you find the performance of the TWSBI and Goulet nibs compared to dip nibs? I love my Mitchell Roundhand nibs.

I've not used broad edged dip nibs, but I can compare them to dedicated broad edged calligraphy pens. Neither are as crisp, but with the slightly rounded corners are more comfortable to write with and are a bit more forgiving as far as angle. My newest TWSBI 1.1 mm is pretty crisp and looks almost as good as a F Sheaffer calligraphy nib. It is crisper than the Parallel 1.1 nib. but is a little smoother for cursive or joined up italic. The Goulet 1.5 is good as long as the ink is wet. The Jinhao feed/converter combo isn't the best flowing, so I have to turn the converter knob occasionally to keep a wet flow going. I'll try to take a couple of pictures tonight to show how they work for me.

Here is a little writing sample. The widest thin line is the Parallel. The TWSBI 1.1 nibs are similar to the Sheaffer calligraphy pen size. Try a Lamy 1.9, it has slightly rounded edges and although is not as large a size as the Pilot Parallels start at, it is not so small a nib as to be hard work.
