I was in the MB boutique in Dallas to check out Pens, and the sales rep was adamant that the 146 and 149 were designed not to post. Is that correct? Curious on opinions.

He might have meant they weren't specifically designed for their caps to post, in the way the Starwalker and the Boheme and some other models are designed to post. :)
Neither the 146 nor the 149 need to be posted in order for them to feel like perfectly balanced pens, but if owners want to post them then it's up to them.
I've never posted a 146 or 149 nor any WE's. However, the Boheme is designed to be posted, so I usually post that pen. :)
Yeah, I worry that the cap will fall off my 149 if I post it. Add to that the swirl marks created on the barrel from doing that.

I used to post all my pens. Now, I am part of the post-post scene.
I am inclined to agree with Chrissy but also believe that MB sales associates don’t really receive an education in their products. MB sells luxury products along with pens. Sales associates don’t get paid a living wage and pick up knowledge about their products on an ad hoc basis. Unless you are going into a store that only sells fountain pens, expect to know more about pens than the sales associate.
Even when I can post, I don't. It usually makes the pen back-heavy for me.
My 149s feel more comfortable when posted. The only times I don't post them is when I am writing in my lap and just quickly jotting notes. At those times, I clip the cap to my shirt. Should I confess that I don't own a 146 at the moment? When I have had 146s, I always posted them. I agree with Chrissy that the 149 is well balanced without posting, but I believe the model is just as well balanced with a different center of gravity when posted.
To address NDAzone's comment. Of the many 149s I have owned over the years, only one had a cap which would not post securely. The cap lip simply would not grip the barrel when posted. I don't worry about the barrel marks from posting. For me, those are natural to the practice of writing with a fountain pen. While not pretty, the barrel wear is similar to a violinist's fingers or a dancer's feet, wonderfully distorted from proper use.
Finally, dfo, I absolutely agree with you about the knowledge of sales associates in Montblanc shops. It is sad, but you are correct about how sales and most service personnel are treated.
I post everything possible.
