If you have vintage inkwells, usually they are missing their inserts (a/k/a ink pots or liners). Here are two sources for the inserts, both of which are in the UK:

Bought in hopes of finding a German glasshutte to get some inserts blown....none left. Have to go to the Chech republic.

Glass is much more expensive than I thought....so will go with the other.
I like clear crystal and glass inkwells such as these, and they should have glass inserts. On the other hand, I don't put ink in my inkwells, so I've been happy with them without investing in inserts. When I use a dip pen (a rare event), I dip into the bottle.Quote:

None of my 36 inkwells or inkwell sets have any gasket, be it leather or cork...except for the stagecoach one.
I have very few that screw close....3-4-5? They are small.
I seldom actually use my inkwells, but ...it's an if and or when question.
First one has to pick an ink that one will be using for a month or so....the soft ball sized one....for 1/4th a year (with out the 60+ insert there was 120 someodd ml if not using the insert....so 1/2 a year).....
.....and be willing to add a splash of water every once in a while, in it does evaporate..............which it did in the old days too.
But back before the day, one was only using a couple of colors....ie blue or black and red, for business in two inkwell sets. so you had a lot of that ink floating around, and just topped up.
PS, I do have some dip pen inkwells, but they are quite old.

These have the 'sanders' where they held the dried crushed cuttlefish to soak up ink.
Sand was used by some to keep the back of the paper from being smeared with slow drying ink.....but wasn't kept in the 'sander'.
And one trimmed one's goose or crow feather in the old office and homes were very drafty. And you didn't want a gust of wind to move your quill. One left just a bit of feather on top so you could brush the dried ink soaked cuttle fish off your paper before folding it as an envelope.
