I think you are on the right track: the only thing that makes sense to me is that the chasing pattern is a very rare variant. It is hard to tell, due to the condition, but some of the Wahl patterns (IIRC) involved two different gold platings or alloys, deposited and then some of it removed. This could also be at play. At those numbers for what - in common form - are somewhat common pens, I have to think it is either a rara avis or a douche with deep pockets who wanted this particular gold pen no matter what.
Examining the bids, it looks like the latter. Someone who recognized the value or wanted it for a collection and bid high. Losing bidder appeared to try a snipe, but sniped too low.Quote:
