Surprising OS Balance With Double Deco Bands
After a 4 year hiatus from pendom, I decided to attend the Chicago Pen Show. Roger Wooten has done an excellent job organizing and running the show. Not only did I see a lot of familiar faces but Han had a special pen waiting for me. A Black and Pearl Oversize Balance with Double Deco cap band with a surprise. Care to take a guess?

Sheaffer opened their Canadian plant in 1927 starting with Flat-tops and later Balance pens. Features we use to date these pens occurred at different times that make dating Canadian pens a little difficult.
Both of these have the 1931-32 short humped clip with the ball end, The black pen is from Fort Madison, has the 1931-32 short humped clip with the ball end, the ring retained lever and the two-tone Feather Touch Lifetime Nib that also date it 1931-32, as far as I know. Its barrel imprint reads:
W.A. SHEAFFER PEN CO.
FORT MADISON, IOWA. U.S.A.
PAT. D-78,795
However the Canadian pen has the early pinned lever and monotone Lifetime nib, its imprint reads:
W.A. SHEAFFER PEN CO.
(OF CANADA LTD) TORONTO ONT. PAT.
DEC.10.12 - JAN.27 - OCT.20 - NOV.24.14

Thank you! I was unaware of these.

Those are stunning! Thanks for sharing such great pics. As an owner of a few rather humble balances I didn't realize texture patterns were placed on any of the bands. Or that any had two bands.
Re: Surprising OS Balance With Double Deco Bands
You should model it next to the black pen with the star.
Well done in Chicago.

Years ago when I decided that collecting Sheaffer OS Balance pens would be easy, I had no idea of the clip and cap band variations. Years later I found out about those made in Canada. I had a pen barrel marked Toronto but this is my first pen with the nib marked Made in Canada. So Sheaffer had a legit factory there, not just shipped pen parts to be assembled there.

There is the Autograph cap with 14K hallmarked clip and wide cap band that appears in Sheaffer catalogs and advertisements of the time. However there are a few cap band variations that are uncatalogued and hard to find. I have been looking for a fishscale band for years.

I will make my next thread for the Star OS Balance, after finding what the star represented for sure.

I'm glad you got that pen from Doug. It was also good to finally meet you even though it was a brief hello.
