Re: Sheaffer scrip v-black
I often write with vintage ink in good pens. I check for sediment or floaters and if those are absent, I use the ink. I check "permanent" inks with a dip pen. I dip the pen and let the ink dry on it. If the ink won't rinse away completely with distilled water, I discard it.
Re: Sheaffer scrip v-black
I use a lot of vintage Sheaffer, Parker Quink and Waterman inks. I have not had any problems with them. (V-Mail was a WWII thing for those who don't know.)
Re: Sheaffer scrip v-black
V-Mail ink was used to send letters to WW11 servicemen because it copied better and they copied the letters onto rolls before sending them. It was meant to be a very black ink but the swab looks like a fairly normal black.
Re: Sheaffer scrip v-black
I’ve been using vintage Sheaffer Skrip ink before it was vintage 😂, and some that’s older than I am that I’ve gotten from EBay. Very old bottles and cartridges tend to have some water evaporation loss, so I add a bit of distilled water.
It’s famously safe and well-behaved ink, and assuming you don’t have contamination or separation (neither of which I have ever seen) therefore should be fine in any pen. Sheaffer used to advertise that it was good in all pens — it never had problems such as the notorious Parker 51 ink or Superchrome, for example. It was sold when now-vintage pens were new and meant for them.

That sure brings back memories! I was post-V-Mail, but in the '50's when I started using fountain pens, the Skrip bottles and boxes still looked the same except for the V-Mail notation.
A very practical bottle with the built in inkwell.

I just moments ago re-filled one of my pens from one of those Sheaffer ink bottles. :)

I think I need to find a bottle of that in Blue/Black for my desk! Second childhood!😊
