Should have been a marmalade-coloured ink really, but it's Pelikan 4001 Violet in a Preppy 0.3 cursive italic. My first nib grind wot I ever done. (Yes, I was an ambitious idiot.)
Why an idiot?
It is obvious that people with the pen hobby sooner or later start also grinding nibs.
And if you use the right equipment (a simple grinding stone is not enough), are not ham fisted, have spatial sense, look at very good similar ground nibs first (I prefer vintage ones) and carefully prepare/execute it, then it´s not rocket science. (no matter some people think so, just start with cheap ones and do not ruin vintage or expensive ones)
This was my first home ground nib I did a couple of years ago.
I still like the grind, but the Jinhao 159 is way too big and clunky to write comfortable with (at least for me).

Grinding your own nibs is definitely not idiotic, but starting out with a Japanese fine nib is pretty much the definition of it! Still, that was several years ago, and it didn't put me off as a lot of nibs have passed over the diamond hone since then.
But the truth is also that also a simple pencil can be a wonderful writing device.

* We seldom think of what we have, but always of what we lack.
Btw.
Pencils are excellent training pens to learn writing with a flex pen and develop a light hand.
If you can see a clear line variation between the upper and the down stroke you are on the right path.
