Schaeffer from the 40's i think.
I have my mothers old fountain pen. It will pull ink into the barrel, it loads by pulling the end of the pen out after you unscrew it. It has a large silver barrel that comes out as you pull. I dont know how to keep the ink in it as it emptys back when you push it back in. I need help please. Thank you.
Re: Schaeffer from the 40's i think.
Sounds like it's a touchdown filler. It's got a latex sac inside that has likely perished. You can buy replacement sacs, and the touchdowns aren't too hard to repair. Alternately, there are any number of folks that can repair it for a fee.
Cheers!

Thank you. I can take a picture or two if i can finger out how, lol. I have never repaired a pen. dont know how to even get the nib or plunger out.
Re: Schaeffer from the 40's i think.
I think that Chrissy is right; your pen is a touchdown (TD) filler.
A TD filler is a pneumatic filler, i.e. pressing the tube down compresses the air in the barrel, which squeezes the sac. At the end of the stroke you should hear a little "chiff" as the compressed air is released. As the pressure drops, the sac expands and ink flows into the pen. The pen is now full. If you cycle the TD tube again, ink should be pushed out of the pen. If it doesn't the pen likely needs to be restored, i.e. the sac inside the metal sac guard replaced, nib cleaned, and the 0-ring at the end of the barrel replaced.
Nice pens, that I like better than their later snorkel siblings.

Thank you maybe I just need to give it time to fill. It pulls ink in and pushes it out. I will try giving time to fill. How do I get the nib out? Thanks again to all.

I'm not sure you'd want to get the nib out, especially if it has a conical nib. Hope we can see a picture later.
Re: Schaeffer from the 40's i think.
I suppose that I need to clarify.
You should pull the TD tube back with the nib out of the ink. Then with the nib in the ink, push the TD tube down. Wait 5 seconds or so, then pull the nib. THEN, if you cycle the TD tube, the down stroke should push ink out. You might get a little burp of ink as you pull it up, but the pen would nearly empty on the down stroke.

Sorry but it wasn't me Ron.

According to Richard'sPens, you have a Sheaffer Craftsman with Touchdown filler, identified by the open nib and narrow "wire" cap band. http://www.richardspens.com/ref/profiles/td_tm.htm

Nice color! Congratulations, younricw!
I always seem to end up with the burgundies.

So wonderful to have your mother's pen. You'll always think of her when you write with it.

This is true and I took it over to her and she tried it too and then sent it home with me.
