I just watched the 1939 Yiddish movie "Tevye". It was phenomenal.... it makes "Fiddler on the Roof" seem like a joke.

I had to look up Tevye. I read with surprise that it was filmed on a 130 acre potato farm on Long Island, NY, and is not a musical.
I will admit that I quite enjoyed Fiddler on the Roof, It is easily the only musical I have enjoyed. Now, assuming Tevye is in English, I will have to have a look at it to see the 'non-musical', original rendition.
Re: Which movie did you last see?
Having a father who was an aircraft engineer (on the design team for the Lockheed P-38 Lightning), I grew up putting together all sorts of models, and was fascinated with the early multi-wing craft.
So— watching The Wind Rises, when I spotted the huge seaplane with three sets of triple wings, I was transfixed.

Putting it down to Miyazaki's fertile imagination, I was surprised to find that it was based on a real airplane: the Caproni Ca 60.

It didn't survive the initial test flight. If you poke about online, there's a video—

The Ice Storm (1997).
1970s "Key Party" decadence. Mixed feelings overall, but certainly beautifully made and shot, well-acted, quite funny at times and a beautiful score. The almost dialog free final 20 minutes are very moving.
Re: Which movie did you last see?
I took my kids to the movies for the first time to see "Sing 2." It was cute.
I watched "My Friend Dahmer" finally. Who knew a serial killer's childhood could be portrayed like a teen disney movie?! I enjoyed it, though.
Then I ATTEMPTED to watch the real movie "Dahmer" and checked out at the first graphic bit. Maybe I shouldn't watch these things when I'm alone...

'Maybe I shouldn't watch these things when I'm alone...'
Or, not at all. I believe some things are better left unseen and unknown.
Re: Which movie did you last see?
Not sure why anyone would choose to watch chainsaw massacres or gory slasher flicks or the like.
Especially with all the war news from Ukraine.

Tevye is Yiddish with English subtitles.

Awesome bit of research. 👍🏻👍🏻 I love that it adds to the depth of the movie . Muchas gracias
Re: Which movie did you last see?
@Lloyd, thanks for posting the link. I really enjoyed watching Tevye. It evoked a bit the final speech of the Great Dictator for some reason.
The film itself reminded me most of silent movies or early talkies.
One has to hand it. Nothing can give you texture like nitrate films. There are scenes in the room when the black wall behind is alive :)
Re: Which movie did you last see?
@Yazeh - I'm glad you liked it. I'm a big fan of silent movies, and films of the '30s (not a shock given my avatar). I found this movie really delivered a believability of people, place, and time, that far exceeded the musical.

I had a period of silent/early 30s. One of the most memorable experience was Fritz Lang's Die Nibelungen with live music. The other was The Scarlett Letter with no sound/no music.
But with time, and maturity, many of my oft loved movies, feel so dated. I Used to love my My Man Godfrey, now I can't stand it.
I found this movie, eerily synchronistic as I was reading up about Holodomor/ Lviv pogrom of '41 . And recently I read there's a new documentary, by an Ukrainan director about the Babi Yar massacre, comprised of actual films shot by German and Soviet propaganda offices. Eerie !

Wasn't it also a Studio Ghibli? In any case, we've seen it multiple times.
Last film we watched to completion: Flamingo Road, Joan Crawford and Sidney Greenstreet.

Saw Kenneth Branagh's Belfast last night. Recommend it without reserve....

Re: Which movie did you last see?
@Lloyd, old French films have atrocious sounds. Do you use a sound bar?

I've always said it's a good thing I was born in the US instead of almost any other country since I only speak English.
