I'm a numerical analyst (a specific flavor of mathematician) working for a company that makes software for scientists and engineers. The folks in the math department at Baylor left up the promo page for a talk I gave a couple of years ago, and it has a lot more information than you could possibly want to know.

My husband is quite familiar with MatLab. He has an MS in Computer Science and his thesis was something involving data mining (beyond my ken).

... and I wonder how many non-mathematicians picked up a copy of Wolfram's "A New Kind of Science"? After my 2nd degree (BS in software engineering, due to the precarious nature of a music career!), I became a bit of a numbers geek.

Not that I understand it very much.

I remember. In fact, I remember you asking on FPN what you should tell your husband to get you for a Christmas present, and I suggested, half-jokingly, a 36-pen Girologio pen case (because that's what I wanted).

    This is me:

I live in a clearing on top of a hill in the highland area of the boreal forest of Ontario. I live in an as yet unfinished house, and get snowed in a lot. I am snowed in right now.

I have spent many years designing and developing automation software for mainframe computer systems. I like to spend time alone in the forest. I like such things as quantum mechanics and cosmological theories, and am currently working on a multidimensional explanation for gravity, as a result of current thinking about dark matter. I am not a very interesting person to take to parties. I have lived and worked in 10 countries, including China, before the open-door policy.

It is not always winter here, sometimes it is autumn, and we can dress more sensibly.

Ha ha. I remember those days of looking like you're dressed for travel to the North Pole.

    Are you from Scotland?

3 layers on the legs, 5 or 6 on top. 2 layers of socks with plastic bags between the layers. It can be a real hoot going out for wood. I am not from Scotland, but live in the highlands of Scottish Canada. That is the Maple Leaf tartan, the colours of Canada.

The cat is Mr. Ming Pookers. He came to me in very bad condition. Starved, flea and disease ridden. I hate the people who abandon unwanted animals in the countryside. After I cleaned him up he lived with me for 2 years before a fisher took him. He was a very intelligent, cheeky cat. I tracked the fisher, through the snow to its lair and took the handful of remains left, so that if it ever transpires that I have $50,000 to spare, I will have him cloned. I like all the animals and in general they seem to like me. When my daughter was 9 she said she wanted a cat, so I caught a feral cat in a raccoon trap and forcibly tamed her. Her name is the Lady Tiggy von Hissenskratch. She has been with me for 13 years now and still sticks very close to me at all times. When I take up my stick, she knows it is walkies time. She is a "doggy cat", and walks with me in the deep woods. She behaves as if she is aware of the other animals watching her, and is shows off that they cannot touch her, because she has her "big hairy ugly" with her for protection.

Very cool thread. It's fun to see the faces of some people I've corresponded with! This is me, relaxing between hours of dipnetting for salmon the Kenai River. I may or may not have been fortifying myself with a wee dram or two of vodka at the time...

@Scrawler, I'm missing something in the terminology here. What's a fisher?
