    Default Binder Burgundy

My friend sent me a sample of think ink at the weekend. I've tried it over the weekend, and here is what I think:

    • Very good flow

    • Nicely lubricated

    • Does Show/Bleedthrough on cheap paper

    • Very little feathering

    • Really nice neutral colour

    • It shades really nicely

    • From what I know of the mix. it is cheap to make

I really like this ink, the colour is neutral with none of the blue tints of many other burgundys. The ink flows well and I haven't had a hard start, skip etc since using it. The ink writes as soon as it touches the paper. It is a highly saturated ink with good shading qualities. The ink does bleed/showthrough on cheaper paper, but maybe that is the pen I used, the Galactic is a gusher. There is no feathering on good paper, but does a little on cheaper paper.

If what I believe is correct (it's a mix of Sheaffer and Waterman), then this would be a very cheap ink to mix up yourself. The colour is nice and dark and is suitable for any purpose you like. The water resistance on this is very low, and I think if I left the water test any longer than my usual 5 minutes, the colour would go completely.

I haven't been able to capture the colour quite as it is in reality, I've managed to get a blue tint in the picture that isn't actually there. I've been looking for a good burgundy, and this may just be it.

    Cheers,

    Bud.

I believe the mix is 50/50 Waterman Purple and Sheaffer Skrip Red.

If you make a 50/50 mix of Waterman Purple and Waterman Florida Blue (or whatever it's called now) you get "Blurple"

The Binder Burgundy mix is definitely 50/50 Waterman Purple and Sheaffer Skrip red. I use it in my burgundy Parker 51

Isn't Diamine Syrah made to imitate this ink?

Now you mention it, I agree that it does strongly resemble Diamine Syrah.

Yes, I remember the hub bub about it when Syrah first came out. I don't recall how Diamine actually came to reproduce the color, whether it was a request by Richard Binder or from someone else, but Richard did work with them to finalize the production ink. It's one of my favorite colors, too.

Diamine Syrah IS Binder Burgundy. Richard mentioned it in another forum a couple years ago. That's good news for those who like the Binder color. I love Syrah. It's my favorite burgundy.

You mentioned that the ink shows some bleed-through on cheaper paper, garten of banban 3 but it's possible that the pen you used (Galactic) is a particularly generous writer. The ink's neutral color without any blue tints is appealing to you, and it shades nicely, adding depth to your writing.
