Default Are there used Pelikans to be found for ~30$ or so?

I'm relatively new to the hobby, and have amassed a small collection of pens: Lamy Safari, Lamy Nexx, 2 Pilot Metros, a couple of Jinfaris, two lovely vintage/ NOS pens bought from Lexaf.
I would very much like to own a Pelikan pen but I cant afford to pay the prices I've seen so far.
Is it possible to find a used Pelikan in good writing condition ( and not the junior/Pelikano pens) ,online ( I don't live in the US) for ~ 50$ ? Where should I look?

    Thanks :-)

That is awfully low for anything of quality. If you find something, it will probably be what we call a "sumgai", and will be a very lucky find. You might try to narrow it down a bit. For instance, for years Pel made a 'school pen', essentially an entry level piston filling pen, the 140. They can be very nice pens, and indeed I have one inked up on my desk pretty much all the time. They are probably just about the least expensive of the vintage Pelikan pens, and you might find something at least *close* to your mark, but the price point you are asking is, to be honest, not very realistic.

The realistic answer is no. I live in Germany and have done it, but that is usually just going after the junker pens for parts and failing most of the time in several hundred attempts. Maybe more. I can tell you from that experience that mostly you get what you pay for and you will save money in the long run by first, being patient, and second, paying the premium to get one from a reputed seller that has already been professionally inspected and repaired. Spending a little more money on one is cheaper in the long run than buying half a dozen at bargain prices that all have issues of one type or another. And like Jon said, your only realistic targets would be 120's, 140's, M150's or M200's if you insist on trying anyway.

Ahem. You need to live in the real world. First, take a look at a good number of retail sites on the net. Look, for instance, at Rick Propas' site. Then, go to eBay, search for Pelikan fountain pens, and then restrict the results to only "sold (or completed) listings". You'll see not what people wanted to sell them for, but what they actually got.

Then you can determine if you are being realistic in what you want for what you seem willing to pay.

The answer is no. Pelikans are high quality pens, even the older cheaper models will be 70-100 in working but user grade condition. You can totally find lots of great old Pelikans (like the P1 for around $100.) They are worth it. You are better off investing in one $100 P1 than three or four 20 or 30 pens.

The cheapest you can go is for one of those Indian ED pens that will take a Pelikan nib unit. A nib unit can be from 15-35 dollars, and the ED body is about 25? 35? something like that.

Or, a rough condition Pelikan 120 might be the cheapest thing.

I lucked out and purchased an M100 with the ballpoint for $85 IIRC. I do remember reading some threads that were quite old about people getting them for around $50. Those days are long gone. The M100 by itself is around $100 on eBay now and in NOS condition.

Maybe $80 (ie: a lot of the older M100 New-Old-Stocks), at $100 there's brand new Pelikan M200 with steel nibs. $100 to $200 will get you anything from a few vintage Pelikans (140, 120, 400nn in standard colors), to modern such as a modern M400 for just over $200.

Though if you want a Pelikan look-a-like, the Reforms are pretty cheap.

Well, Pen Chalet has the Pelikan Tradition 200 in Cognac or Black for $118.80, or the M200 Cafe Creme at $155.00 using the extra SBREBROWN discount. Not sure about international shipping, but domestic US is free.

Cognac one about $95 from Japan (plus about $12-15 for EMS shipping, and I think Pen-House charges an export tax around 10 to 20, not sure on the last bit).

I've found the M200 for ~60 euro on European sites, so I guess will save up for one of these.

    Thanks to all!

Martini auctions has some New Classics for around $50. You're not going to find a piston-filler in that range without a lot of luck.

    "you snooze, you loose"

When you find deals, you have to jump on it NOW.
If you wait to save up, the deal will probably be long gone by the time you have saved up.
So, you have to have the cash already to buy as soon as you find it.

Thanks, it wasn't any special deal though , just regular price on sites such as The Writing Desk or Lacoronne Du Comte.

At about 65 USD (ie 60 euros) are you sure it was the M200 and not the P200 ? (one's a piston filler (M), the other is a cartridge version(P)).
