Spent some time with the stinky floody Noodlers Ahab today...Good art pen now...after mods. If you can take the smell, it's a good performer!

Very nice indeed. Also, far beyond my pathetically limited talents.

On August 4th, tropical storm Isaias passed through here, knocking down many trees and branches, and leaving my town without power for a week.

This tree is in the adjacent town where I take a daily walk. I don't know if it can survive the damage it took, but I'm interested in seeing how it does. You could say that I'm rooting for it.

It would be an interesting study for a real artist; feel free to draw from the above photo if you like. Here's a sketch of my own, just experimenting with a fountain pen. Pilot MYU and De Atramentis Document Brown ink.

I recently enlisted the help of an online word generator (many of them out there, just pick one) and get myself a list of random words that I use as a prompt to pick the subject for my sketches.

This sketch of a vintage fire hose nozzle assembly is the result of the prompt "hose". It may look obvious now, but it actually took some thinking to create.

Replying to my own post, but what the heck. It's not like this is the busiest thread. And I have a follow up.

Last week, when going for my usual walk, I noticed that this tree now sported a splash of bright orange paint. I guessed that this might be the mark of doom, that it had been singled out for removal. Today that was confirmed. As I passed, a crew from the public works department was cutting it into chunks and feeding them into a wood chipper.

This was doubtless a sensible decision, as the badly wounded tree was near the line suspending a traffic light across the street. Another bad storm, of the kind we'll certainly get again, could have brought it down. Still, I had been curious to see if it could recover, and would have liked to see it get the chance.

But it has occurred to me that one of the points of drawing is not merely to depict something, but to make oneself observe it. My attempt at sketching may not have been all that successful, but it made me think about, and look more closely at, something which I might otherwise just have taken for granted.

    And which is now gone.

Finally, Will learns how to sketch his username

Ever wonder why I chose "penwash" as my username?

Because, although I know how to sketch with a fountain pen, I always become overwhelmed when I try to combine it with my favorite paint media, watercolors. So I chose penwash because I aspire to be able to do it well someday.

And a few years later, I think I finally found a process that would work for me:

    The steps are:

    1. Pick up my watercolor set.
    2. Put it away.
    3. Pick up a fountain pen ink (Vinta Armada in this case).
    4. Pick up any clean plastic lid (could have used my watercolor palette, but I want to emphasize the simplicity here).
    5. Put a few drops of said ink.
    6. Dilute each drop with varying amount of water to create different shades (tiny amounts).
    7. Pick up the vintage pen of choice (most of my fountain pens are old, YMMV).
    8. Sketch as usual, sans the hatching.
    9. Start having fun with my waterbrush.
    10. Done.

This setup is a lot simpler for my brain, which apparently can't handle having to choose from a subset of 12 color tubes.

And most importantly, I now can truly live up to my username. Ha!

As of late last year, I started, and continue to use a generated words-list as prompts to help me with sketching subjects. This one is for the word "cast".

What is vintage and has to do with "cast"? How about this iron-cast ... uh, iron?

These coal powered irons were the pressing matter when it comes to dapper-ness back in its day, which is not too far from when the first of the fountain pens started to be mass-produced.

Some of them actually were made quite ornately. Just don't mind the little fish, he's just letting off some steam.

This post also qualifies for the obscure pen brand thread.

A Wintry Scene using Callifolio Grenat both for the sketch and for the wash. The pen is an Onward that uses the same celluloid as a Copper Esterbrook J.

(interesting pinkish hue that I wasn't expecting out of a dark purple ink).
