Help dating this 149 and or its parts.

Got this from eBay advertised as a 1982 149. Even with the 18k bicolor nib I was expecting a split ebonite feed, and a W.-GERMANY marking without serial number. It came marked Germany w/ serial number and the "breather" hole in the back. I'm not sure if it has an ebonite feed.

That's a split feed made of hard rubber, or "Ebonite."

I forgot to mention this pen does have the plastic threads. It also has what looks like a two section barrel (sorry for my lousy pics). The chart shows an overlap of the two section/one section barrel starting at 1983 (this listed as an '82).

So what do I have here a franken 149, which I should return (I paid $444)? What about the hole in the cap?

I'm pretty miffed at myself letting my guard down on this one. Not to make excuses but I had a tbi at the right frontal lobe six years ago. Having lost some grey matter there, it was a tough battle but I've also improved tremendously. Still things get away from me once in a while.

Here's a better pic of the serial number and hole in the back of the cap. I've read of breather holes, but I thought they were hidden under the clip?


I notice the clip and cap band fonts are smaller than on my early 90's W.-Germany 146.

Likely not a franken pen but a repaired pen. The clip is simply on 180 degrees out. IIRC there is a screw in the cap that lets you loosen the crown and you can turn the clip around to where you want it. Honestly, I would be shocked if anyone could date a 149 to a specific year.

Thanks Jar. The period incorrect clip does bug me a little. Still wonder if this was a decent value of if I over paid.

Whether I keep this or not, I very much want a 149 in house. The ergos feel great!

If I wanted a 149 in the house, and the egos felt great, I would just turn the clip around and keep it.

Was sorely tempted to ink it up but resisted, as I forgot to mention it also came with a medium nib as opposed to the fine nib that was listed on the auction. Was seriously considering keeping it last night, but the nib was the last straw.

Looks like this 149 is going back to the seller, and he will be responsible for shipping.

Would like to start a new thread with questions pertaining to a 149 search. Not sure if it should go here or in Pens in General.

Agree. I have both a fat and thin medium PB stubs, and a soon-to-be .8mm pending. I thought of a F or EF for carry around use, but may reevaluate that specification.

Can a stub be made as smooth as a round? My (thinnish) M BLS 146 is very sweet, but for me can be a bit slow under pressure with run-of-the-mill paper.

I love all the 1950 pens from MB and they are all flat on the back, very smooth and awesome to use....

Does the M in the snowflake on top of the nib not indicate medium? I ask because so many of these are labeled as F.


Any thoughts on these at eBay, as good everyday pens? There are similar pens at Go Pens described as mint. Pricy, but I think these have more flex than late 80's on?

The "M" stands for (drum roll please)...Montblanc. Montblanc used to emboss the knob with the nib type, but it's been 65 55 years. Since then, it's just a little gold sticker on the barrel that the new owner peels off.

Please post your photos of nibs with an "F" instead of the "M."

A mentioned above the "M" is for Montblanc.

The pens at GoPen are often near the top range in pricing but also from a source that is known, reputable and accurately marketed.

I looked up the ad, and for one thing, it looks like a Fine to me, and for another, I don't think the seller intended to make a big deal out of the 1982 date. Quite apart from that, however, any non-period replacement parts would be something, as a seller, I would be embarrassed not to have disclosed. Upon being informed of this, I would be apologetic and accommodating. Apart from offering to pay return shipping, I might see if I could negotiate a small settlement to make everything right, and hopefully everybody happy, instead.

My bad, not "labeled as fine", but "indicated as fine in the auction description".

I'm open to a small settlement which would be a lot less messy.
