OMAS 50th. Anniversary of D-Day fountain pen

Often when the discussion turns to Limited Edition pens or Commemorative pens the first things that come to mind are wild designs, jewels and precious metals, but here is one that goes in the other direction.

In 1994 OMAS issued a 50^th Anniversary of D-Day fountain pen. To commemorate the day they decided not to go with the normal extravaganza but to create something subdued, understated, subtle and appropriate to the seriousness of the event.

They selected their Ogival shape, rounded, softer and instead of some of their bright and glowing celluloid patterns used their Vegital Resin in an olive (medium) green with a cap coated not in gold or silver or rhodium or palladium but just anodized aluminum. This tone and theme was carried out across every part, instead of a fancy box the outer packaging was a simple cardboard box in green, light blue the color of the sky, dark blue the color of the seas, blood red for sacrifice and pure white to symbolize the spirit. The inner case was but cast aluminum in the shape and form of the GI issue Medical-pack. The pen itself had the normal OMAS 18K nib, no fancy designs or elaboration and was the traditional OMAS piston filler.

The edition was limited to 5300, the number of vessels that were involved in the invasion armada. So here is a glance at #1676 and hopefully the pictures will speak for themselves.

I picked one up in 1999 at The L.A. Pen show. My son who was five then always loved it. He was born in 94, when the
Pen was released. I gave it to him for his BD in 08, but he is not into F pens, he is a lefty. I think that it is a remarkable pen.

Do you mean he's not in to fine nib fountain pens, or not into fountain pens in general? Nice gift either way!

He isn't into F Pens. His good friend is however, and his friend and I have spent many hours testing pens, watching Goulet videos, reading Pen World Magazines from decades past, and going through old Pen books. So since my son's best friend is into it, he sort of is, but just does not enjoy them. On be other hand, my 21 year old is very much into it. When both kids learned to write their name, I bought them each Parker 45s. My oldest son worked with my youngest to get him to write his name so he could get a Parker 45.
