Question About Getting a Custom Nib Grind

This may be a silly/stupid question, but I live by the philosophy that the only silly/stupid question is the one not asked. So here goes. I am thinking of getting my first custom nib grind. Do you send the entire pen or can you send just the nib & feed unit?

I've always sent the entire pen.

The more information you can send the more likely you get what you expect.

I like to send a picture showing me writing so they can see angle, paper angles, rotation, elevation etc. Also a writing sample of how it looks now and if available, an example of what I would like it to be. Include information about your normal inks, whether you like wet or dry, how hard do you press, anything else that might help.

Send the whole pen so it matches the picture.

Ask the person if they want any more information.

I send the whole pen, unless the person already have a copy of the pen to try my nib on. Worth asking to save on S&H.

Likewise, I send the whole pen, plus a description of my (lefty) writing style. Haven't been disappointed in the results yet.

I sent a pen to Pendleton Brown. He requested the entire pen and some notes about which hand I write with, my wet/dry preference, etc. Good experience and not too long a wait.

Another reason to send the entire pen is that there is always a slight chance to misalign the nib/ feed when returning it to the pen. While I've done that (correctly) plenty of times, I figure I'll let the pros do it here (assuming the are removing it from the pen to do the grind.)

Thanks for all of the replies and helpful tips. I just sent my first pen of to Daniel Smith (thenibsmith.com) to get my first Hebrew/Architect grind. I had already considered sending a writing sample, but ended up sending a couple photos of me writing with the pen along with other information suggested in this thread that I would not have included otherwise.
