Default I think I may have a problem

I have been trying to make a "list" of inks to consider. Do keep in mind I have a total of 3 inks at this time. I have 38 inks to consider on my list. You got that right, 38. My list needs to be culled down quite a bit. There is no way I could use that much ink. I know I must visit tons of ink reviews. I've already done that, with more work to go. How do YOU narrow your wish list? They all look so pretty. But I must get that list down to no more than a dozen. I will buy as money will allow. Thoughts?

Where is your list - what inks are you looking at - what color spectrum?

    Hi, KKay,

I just get samples, usually about 4 or 5 at a time, and try them before committing to an entire bottle. Maybe just play eenie meenie miney moe with your list?

One per color group (6 total) and then also blue (2) and black (2) and your favorite color group (2). That makes 12 total.

And then stick to it until you use a bottle up or give it away.

I don't think I have any black on the list. The blue ones aren't med blue or darker blue. I have no true red on the list either. Since I have a gray, the Lexington Gray is going on hold. I will buy it after I use the gray I have, which is Fuyu-syogun.

Don't forget Pelikan Edelstein Topaz for your turquoise list. I just got a sample and it's gorgeous.

Ink samples are a beautiful thing. That said, I started out like you. But, after a few years, I actually have more inks than I could ever possibly use. But, I would own far more inks were it not for the samples.

VertOlive! I had thought of that one before, but that was a while back. I rarely see that one, but yes, it definitely deserves to be on that list. I added about 5 inks on there today, that wasn't on the list before...lol. Let me edit my post with that Topaz!! I am sure there are other inks I loved before, and forgot to add. As I get a bottle, I will put a check on my list. After I try SAMPLES, that list will get revised. Who knows, more will be added, and some taken off that way. But I do need to get the list more acceptable for me. Then I am going to put them in order of which ones are first, second, third to buy etc...

That looks like a very good list. Like many suggested before, trying samples could be a great way to narrow down your list. Also, if you're interested, I've got a couple of bottles on your "possible" list, and in the spirit of giving I'm willing to gift you a few samples of the following: Diamine Ancient Copper and Delamere Green; and Sailor Oku-yama, Tokiwa-matsu, and Yama-dori.

If you're interested, pm me and I'll try to get that to you this week.

Peace, Merry Christmas, and God bless,

Sorry! I'm tied up at the moment, but I usually put that comment in a thread that I want to come back to. I'll edit it later with some actual "ink thoughts".

Ok, you've narrowed it down for a bit, so the only other thing to do is reiterate what others have said:

    You must build a fence.

No, wait: you must buy samples!

There is precisely NOTHING about an image on a computer screen, or even the words of other people in reviews, that can tell you if an ink is right for you. Nothing will come close to putting the ink into pens you use, and writing on paper you favor, in the light of your own drawing room (permit me the literary flourish, you may live in an studio apartment for all I know). Only then can you compare, side-by-side, those inks you love with the challengers/additions. Not only to the eye, but their performance. Bear in mind that if you favor fine nibs, you won't see a lot of the qualities that show up in swabs and swatches.

All of this is critical, and addressed ONLY through sampling the ink. Numerous retailers offer this option, and it is fun to simply build up a library of samples, which can easily be used up in correspondence, greeting cards and notes, etc. Save the really crappy colors for people you don't like (I'm kidding).

I rarely give ink suggestions, because I... know what I like, and that's about it. However, I can tell you that in greens, I've never found a green I like more than Diamine Sherwood Green. Which, of course, means absolutely zero, just that I like it.

Samples, samples, samples. If you can't find a sample of something commercially, give a shout, as many might have it here and could send you a few ml. And enjoy this process!!

Sage advice it seems. Samples samples and more samples!! I have been cutting my list because of reviews, and looking at color charts, when available. I have noticed the same ink in different pens and paper, can vary. (at times I might even say w i l d l y) Thanks people for all the great advice.

You bet! From a recent thread here - 4 pens, 3 papers, one ink...

FWIW, I like both Miruai and Tokiwa-matsu. Something like blue spruce versus juniper in my mind. The first is much wetter, spreading out on the paper more, but is a richer color. The second seems to feel more like dryer pine with a tinge of almost piney sourness. But the wet versus dry plays the biggest part in deciding when to fill one of my pens.
