My first stubby grind...

The nib on this serwex looked like it had a bite taken out of it at first- maybe it had been hit by a tiny asteroid, I dunno. I set to smoothing it and ended up with this: close to 1.5mm I'm guessing. the metal was pitted in a couple spots near the tip so I had to go pretty far down to get to metal I could smooth properly.

first photo is comparing the ground guy to an untouched version of the same nib.





It works very well in my hand and scratches when a righthanded person uses it. fine by me. Now here's a pen I can have fun writing with and not worry about destroying at work or losing. Boom!

I'm a lefty too, but I can't get italics to work for me. How do you do it?

Nice work! Did you use a stone to grind most of it away? Or was all micro mesh?

I used (gasp) 150 grit sandpaper for the bulky work.

Nice! Looks fun. My dad always gets on my case, saying I should just do what he did--buy some Sheaffer school pens and put fun grinds on them...we have very different tastes in pens He has a Pelikan MC120 calligraphy which he ground to a nice wide italic broad--i don't have any nibs of that sort yet, so its fun to take his out sometimes!

That looks really good manoeuver! I still have not got up the courage to do that grind yet but with all these Serwex pens around, I should.

Is a stub nib easier to use for calligraphy than, say a music or just a broad nib?

I've never tried a music nib. edged (stub, italic e.g.) are tougher to use than monoline nibs (broad e.g.) because you haveta keep the nib angle consistent. I am no calligrapher though. a stub makes nearly any handwriting look more interesting.
