Default I'm starting to see pattern in my collection

The simple flat-top with circular roll-stop just does it for me.

From top: Newton Orville (medium-size), Romillo Eo #9, Scriptorium Aeterna (medium-size), Romillo Sil #9, and Romillo Essential #9.

Is there a design element, pen shape, pen material, etc that just clicks with you?

Ooooh. I always wondered what the "dots" were. Roll stops make SO much sense!

I don't know, I find that one pattern stands out much more than the rest.

Out of the five pens in the picture or in your own collection?

Have you guys seen certain colors or pen designs coming up again and again in your collections?

Out of that photo. The Tibaldi Imperium material is majestic. My grail pen is a pen made out of that material.

That's a really good question. I think for me, size is important. I tend not to like very large pens. I do like slender pens and small pens. I do want them to be pretty, but then again, I like the Parker 45, which I would consider utilitarian in looks for the most part (though I do have them in different colors, so maybe I can't say that). So maybe it is color that attracts me. Despite my love for purple, not all of my pens are purple. I'll have to look at my pens tonight and see if there's a pattern.

Good choice! Its's an incredible material and nearly impossible to capture the depth it has. The blue veins, in between the grey/black chipped ice pattern, especially seem to glow in bright light.

Definitely agreed on how important size is. Though for me I lean towards bigger pens. At least bigger in section diameter -- I have a Piccolo that is small in height but the section diameter is a good size and it's very comfortable. Weight is also important lo me, and I imagine lots of others. I like a little heft but beyond 35 grams uncapped, a pen stops being comfortable for me for long writing periods; beyond 45 grams uncapped, I'd avoid a pen altogether. So lots of solid copper and brass pens that are attractive to me are ruled out on weight alone.

I'm looking forward to seeing what patterns you find in your collection =]

All of my pens have nibs (except for one stylograph) and they are paid for.

Then again, it's a little easier - if more expensive - to have that narrow a focus when you are simply ordering up bespoke pens. I think finding an entire collection or sub-collection of pens when hunting vintage might be a tad harder, and probably also expensive. I have no one thing that floats my boat, but a few general areas: striped celluloids from the 30's-40's; pens with a brown/gold hue to them (Parker Golden Pearl, Sheaffer Brown Striated, various other pens in those colors); demonstrator-ish pens. When I look at the tray of pens I use regularly, on a daily basis, it turns out there is a lot of variety. Different pens for different moods.

Made by National/Barrett . You see these under several different names and very good quality.

Yeah, that's definitely true. Though I don't really think of my pens as a focus so much as just a style of pen design I happened to really like. Part of the reason I tend to buy bespoke makers is because it's so hard to find clipless modern pens outside of the Japanese urushi pens. My pen journey has probably been different from most others' though. I've never owned a Montblanc, Visconti, Pelikan, Sailor, S.T. Dupont, Yard o Led, Montegrappa, Graf von Faber Castell, Aurora, Omas, Delta, etc. but I've own 6+ custom pens.

Those striped celluloids really are lovely =]

National used the same clip pattern on several of their brands, too.

It's the size, material, trims, all of these seems to come together very nicely with this pen. I don't often see this in a single pen.

On top of it, that Warranted #8 nib that comes with it is also performing well without a fuss.

I don't know what the fuss is all about: I just use old chewing gum to keep them from rolling off the table.

Seriously, I follow several mini-patterns, which are more like a group of types I like. Flattops cool, flex cool vacumatics sublime, pinstripe and moire and art deco the best, classy black great, and fixations on certain brands like Mabie Todd or Parker change over time. My patterns are more accidents of chronological interest and opportunity, so often my groupings by type are from the same period. I bet that is not unusual.

What a lovely little pen family! Very elegant taste you have.

The Nakaya shape is what does it for me. My first was a piccolo but I've got a couple now, and Renee made me one of her great pens in the same shape. I have no idea what it's called, and I don't care of its longer (like the naka-ai or shorter like the piccolo). Someone must have named that shape? (I too prefer a roll stopper to a clip as I don't use clips as anything but a roll stopper!)

Current pen rotation: way too many!
