    Default New Esterbrook on Massdrop

Did you guys see this Esterbrook on Massdrop? What do you think?

    https://www.massdrop.com/buy/esterbrook-m2

    They are also peddling inks.

In some ways, I like the look of the pen; I am curious about it. On the other hand, I feel that I would be betraying the Esterbrook name if I bought this.

    What do you think?

I have the same feeling. Besides, they look like the Camlin pens from India that can be bought for 1/50 the price.

Here's what I wrote on reddit:

You could easily get two vintage Esterbrook J pens for that price and have four times the writing experience. Better build quality, interchangeable nibs, bulletproof sac-filler. There are few pens of such modest origin that have held up over the decades as well as the J series. These pens are a rip-off of a good name that look to have the build quality of cheap Chinese or Indian pens. If they were $15, maybe. Not for that price, certainly.

    LOL I saw that..

Whats with the free ink that won't go in the pen to the 1st 100 people in?

Why would you give away ink carts with a piston fill pen?

I don't care for the pens style or the graffiti on the side of it. Besides the fact that it looks nothing like the original M2 so why call it that.

That being said..... A pens style, to be hated or loved, is in the eye of the buyer.

It seems I would have to sign up for Massdrop to see the listing, which I don't really want to do right now. But I've seen these neo-Esterbrooks, and don't really get the attraction. If you want a modern pen of similar quality or a bit better, there are plenty of choices in the same general price range that are likely to be better pens. If you want an Esterbrook, the real thing is still easy to find, at least I've found a somewhat ridiculous number of them, J series, Dollar Pens, an M2, lever style desk pens, Dip-Less ones, even a few mechanical pencils. And they're all excellent, with a variety of nibs, styles, and sizes.

That said, I wouldn't go so far as to say that buying one of the modern ones is a betrayal of the Esterbrook name. The company is long defunct, and nobody formerly connected with it is being hurt by this modern imitation. If it appeals to you on its own merits, then why not get one? Maybe it's the naysayers like me who are wrong. And if you do get one, you can at least let us know how it is.

As far as getting the view of the naysayers goes, check out this review: http://blog.andersonpens.com/pen-rev...j-series-pens/

That is not as pathetic as the ridiculous attempt to do a modern Esterbrook J.

But it's still pathetic, don't get me wrong.

I decided against getting one of the pens on the merits that I have four lovely celluloid Esterbrooks of the original type; if I want to invest in anything, it will be more nib choices (with original Esterbrook nibs).

Wow, they could barely contain their disappointment (dislike) for those pens.
