I think I need more practice in figure drawing, so I scribbled a bit with my white Polychromos.
This figure had no real reference, kind of out of my mind result.
Actually I´m quite happy with the result.
Don´t ask why there is a sword in the foreground.
The trivial truth is that I placed my figure a bit too high on the page so I had some room left on the bottom. Then I thought what could I draw in this space to achive a better page balance. .... And voila a sword materialized out of nothing .... which made it hopefully better page balanced and also maybe a bit mysterious.

Today I´ve gone digital and sketched a comic style Rastafari.

Currently the Covid-19 situation seems to be completely out of control in Austria.
A new strict shut down just began.
The last months the government often set on personal responsibility and failed.
Here in Austria they introduced the slogan "Always keep a baby elephant distance" for social distancing in spring.
People just seem to be way too careless.
I still often see people wearing their masks wrong not covering their nose only the mouth.
Without covering also the nose a face mask is completely useless, neither protecting yourself nor others.
So I thought about drawing the social distancing baby elephant but adding also the mask aspect, telling the people the following:
Wear your masks properly!
Always keep your trunk inside and a baby elephant distance!

My newest FP drawing.
I try to get more practice in figure drawing.
Rohrer & Klingner Scabiosa is an awesome iron gall ink for fountain pens.
Being an iron gall ink you would expect per definition a waterproof ink, but the colored dye based component of the ink plays really well with water so you can get really nice ink washes (but do not erase your linework completely) to give depth to your piece.
Imo Scabiosa is a really nice drawing/sketching ink.

Another fountainpen drawing.
An interesting imo interesting effect is that when Scabiosa is applied heavily on the white ink the purple colored dye seems to be covered up by the white and only the grayish black iron gall component is showing up (clearly visible on the smoke above the chimney).
I didn´t used other colors than Scabiosa and White.

Not bad at all Kaputnik. 👍
May I suggest something.
Especially with charcoal it is quite easy to get continues tone gradations.
First I would look at the tone values, where are lights, midtones and darks.
Then I would start to put the darks in, apply it with charcoal and smooth it with your fingers or a tortillion.
When you use a toned paper you might not need to apply mid tones and use mainly the paper background as mid tone.
Otherwise apply your mid tones in the same way.
Using white charcoal (or colored pencil) in the light areas will make your drawing really pop (makes a huge difference).
When done enforce or put in the line work where needed.
Using tone gradations instead of line work only will give your drawing much more depth and three dimensional look.
This is easier than using line work only.
And think about your light source to define light and dark, you should always be aware where the light is coming.
This is in particular visible on the nose.
Drawn noses have in general a light and a dark side.
Drawing a black line on both sides up to the eyes very often looks quite odd.
A frontal view is also not the easiest thing to start portrait drawing, e.g. a two third view might be easier.
Keep on drawing, I enjoy your participation 👍

Thanks Ptero, always glad to have suggestions, particularly on the charcoal techniques, but everything really.
Trying to learn to draw, even if one is ultimately not that successful, helps one to look at things in a different way, and hopefully to observe the world more minutely.
I do try to be aware of light sources, but it is often difficult for me to figure out, particularly when working from a photo. With these photos of the homeless, the light appears to be coming from the direction of the observer, not a flash, I think, but perhaps something behind and slightly above the photographer. That leaves the background, and often much of the face as well, in different degrees of shadow. As you say, gradations.
Thanks again.

This time I tried to draw/paint a water moccasin snake as realistic as I can using only 2 colors, green and white.
I know this snake is brown in reality but as I currently test MI#32 I made it green
I´m quite ok with the result.
