    Default Today's Desk

Yes, it was open, and I ended up taking home airmail and high-end stationary, two inks (R&K Verdigris to replace the one I spilled, and N.O.S. Waterman B/B at only $7). It's a very eclectic and funky little shop.

Always confirm opening hours before you go! http://www.pippispenshoppe.net I should have taken photos inside.

Today’s desk. Another cafe, but this time an innocuous coffee chain while I wait for the SO to shop down the street.

All tidied up for the holidays

Online arguments are a lot like the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
As soon as the audience begins to participate, any actual content is lost in the resulting chaos and cacophony.
At that point, all you can do is laugh and enjoy the descent into debasement.

More are en route. I like the "real photo" cards from the first two decades of the 20th century. The challenge is to mimic the writing of that period before I mail them to unsuspecting victims.

I bet they all think of themselves as "lucky recipients."

Where do you get the post cards?

I'd like to know this, too. Most of mine are vintage photos that I have printed and then mount onto cover stock.

My best sources are antiques markets where antiques dealers regularly buy for inventory. These are the same places I hunt pens in the wild.

My rule is never buy cards that have already been sorted. Once sorted, dealers tend to mark them $1 and up, each. Instead, look for boxes and bags of postcards, stuffed or dumped in. Make an offer accordingly, but don't be insulting. Remember, you're saving them time and they get immediate cash.

Example of last Sunday's postcard buys at 6AM in the freezing dark at the antiques market while looking for fountain pens:
    - $35 for two boxes of about 1,500 4x6 postcards, ca. '60s-'00s. After culling and sorting, probably 1,100 remain for mailing = 3˘ each.
    - $3 for one box of about 300 identical B&W 3x5 postcards, ca. late '50s. They're cheap; who could possibly want 300 identical postcards!?

Finally, there's eBay, rarely, and only for vintage '98-'20s real photo cards. Buy in lots (e.g., 50 to 100+), not individual cards.

Remember, postcard sellers make their money from postcard collectors. I am not their usual customer. I buy to mail.

My desk. A beast of a redwood desk, somewhat battered but strong as horse. And huge. The right-hand third and left-hand third of its writing surface are covered with stacks of boxes and other containers. The center section at one time had a slanted drawing board, a cup with some dip pens, and four "dinky dip" vials of ink seated in a 2 inch by 2 inch wooden holder. There was also a cup of water and a rag or two. Atop the stack to the right of my work area was (and still is) a plastic box divided into small sections, each with several nibs in it. And I was able to get some calligraphy practice in. And then the weather started turnng cold, and my desk, which is in the (unheated) garage gradually became a hostile environment, and it was usually too cold for me to want to stick around and put stuff away when I was done with it, and so chaos gradually crept in and took over.

It gets better (or worse, depending on how you look at it). This is a multi-use desk. Sometimes I take down the drawing board and and move all the writing stuff out of the way, and turn the area into an electronics soldering bench, which I'll be doing shortly to add a piezoelectric pickup to a cigar box ukulele that I'm building for my son (he's taking ukulele lessons). The desk also serves as a woodworking bench and a jeweler's bench from time to time, depending on whatever projects I have going.

Cool. Looks like a neater version of my desk. Mine is also multi use and currently has stacks of PCBs I'm hand populating and readying for sale. Before that it was watches and watch tools. I built a hutch onto it to hold all the electronics tools and parts. It also is my computer desk. I've been doing some rearranging to try to keep it neater.
