That looked gray to me, strange. I have tried Do-You before, and it was a darker brown in my opinion. Funny how inks look different in different pens!! When you said think Asia, I was going to say Fuyu-syogun, even though I have it, and it didn't seem a match. I still enjoy guessing though.

Agree. Looks dark grey to me too, rather than brown, which is why I went with Take-sumi.

Yes, absolutely. I'm with you -- it's puzzling to me, too. It does look gray -- or like a very light black. The photo is absolutely accurate on my color-balanced monitor. You can see a slight dark brown tint on cream paper like Tomoe River, if you look for it, but it's still mostly dark gray. It's an ink that has been puzzling me, because of the reputed brown quality, which I really don't see. And that is why I picked it for this -- wondering, am I nuts? But most of the guesses saw the gray and black, too, which makes me feel better.

It's much darker than every gray I have, including Kiri-same and Fuyu-syogun. It's lighter than every light black I have, including Montblanc Mystery Black and Pelikan Brilliant Black.

It reminds me of KWZ Dark Brown, which is also a brown-based lighter black. I found the KWZ ink darker in my pens, even Safaris, and perhaps for that reason I prefer the KWZ, though the Sailor has a nice look in a broad nib, and has excellent lubrication and flow, and is a great ink in its own right. Also, the Sailor does look darker in wetter pens, of course. I just don't have enough wet pens to have had one free at the moment.

Maybe Cacao du Brésil would be another good ink to compare it to.

As you say, every pen is different, and paper. And obviously there's sample variation in every bottle. That's what makes it this so fun.

I can't get any of my Do-you inks to look grey. Most of my pens have fine nibs & even then there is a rich, warm brown note to the lines laid down. This is the case on all papers I use.
When compared to a black-dark grey ink the brown is even more obvious. Yes it's a dark ink, but the warmth of the colour definitely differentiates it from grey.

Cacao du Brésil is very different, to my eyes.

Given that Sailor inks are by far the most consistent of any brands I've tried, by a distance, your grey is a bit of a puzzle
