@Dr. P, I saw the movie Tolkien. It's an oneiric work exploring his journey, well worth the watch, though it's not your classic Hollywood fair....

Completely off topic but I have just finished my complete read through of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy for the 2nd time. I'm very disappointed to finish the last book again because I know I will need to wait for a while until I can begin reading them all again. Eventually the longing overtakes me and I feel the need to read them all again. Maybe it's the control of the one ring.

@Chrissy, in my early twenties, I burrowed the Lord of Rings from my aunt. It was during the student vacations. I read the whole thing in three days. I woke up at 10 in the morning, read the whole day, until the wee hours of the morning and passed out.
@Radon, yep. books with age bring a different level of understanding. I'm tempted to reread some of my old Enid Blyton favourites. I read them at nauseam in my childhood/ teenage years. Comforting...

I've tried so hard over almost fifty years to like the Lord of the Rings, and it's just never happened for me. I can read the Narnia books countless times, love them as much as the first time and find new things in them with each reading. The Little Prince can still reduce me to tears within minutes in several languages, but Tolkein leaves me stone cold.
I read some Enid Blyton as a child, but I don't think they've stood the test of time (apart perhaps from the fairy stories), and some of the viewpoints make me cringe a bit now. Pippi Långstrump on the other hand...

None of the above inks, sorry.
mizgeorge, I never read any of Tolkien or Lewis until I was an adult. I started with The Simarillian. Then I read the Chronicles of Narnia. From there I read everything Lewis ever wrote. Much later, I read the Hobbit, then finally the Lord of the Rings.
What is fascinating about them both was their ability to create works of fiction that seem almost timeless.
Anyway, the current book, "The Hobbit, the Wardrobe and A Great War" by Joseph Loconte is very good and worth the read if you are interested. What started me down this road is that I have been reading a number of histories on WWI. Then I ran on to this one, which is very good.
