Ah, happiness is having just enough in the tiny sample of the most expensive ink I have ever used to write a thought-filled Valentine to my wife. In a beautiful, delicate blue ink. Had to coax the last line out with a micro-drop of water into the reservoir. <sigh of contentment>.

Is the vial itself vile, or is the ink within the vial a color that you consider vile?

I have to say, however, that the phrase conjures up a fairly poetic image. A fountain pen conjurer who keeps cases of vile black ink in the drawer at work … for those times when the situation calls for it. Hmmm… yep, I can think of a few former work colleagues who would have merited a reply in vile black.
