    Default Sheaffer Tuckaway Conversion

    I love them Tucky's

I love the Triumph nib, I love the size, I love the clip, and I just love the look of the pen.

The only one thing that I am not crazy about is the Vacuum filler system. Yes it's a cool mechanism, and yes, I have restored a few without accidents, but the vacuum filler system is way down there in my list of favorite filling systems. I guess I just don't like how it operates.

So I had an idea to convert a Tuckaway vacuum-filler into something that is simpler and easier to use. And this is what I ended up with:

    A Sheaffer Tuckaway bulb-filler.

While the bulb contains a tad less ink than the transparent vacuum chamber (not the barrel), I think I can get very close by installing a breather tube.

Now, I'm sure some of you will say it's a sacrilege to do this conversion, but to me, I gain a much simpler way to fill the pen I love to use with ink, and along with it, I get all the functionality without having to buy special gaskets and seals. Only ink sac, shellac, silicon grease, which I already have invested in.

So let's see, how many of you think this is a good idea, and how many of you think this is not preferable than the vacuum-filler?

Neat. In the past I know folks commonly eye-droppered vac fillers. I always try to get them restored regularly, with the packing unit, etc, rebuilt and not just a plug like many folks do.

And after one whole day used for writing and clipped to my shirt as I move about, no spills, leaks, and the ink flow remains constant.

I was afraid that you'll give me a piece of your mind about converting a Tucky the was I did it

I restored one Sheaffer and one Eversharp vac fills before the "proper" way.
But this time I feel like experimenting. And truthfully, I like the Tucky more as a bulb filler than a vac-fill.

I had the same issue. I love the Tucky (the nib!), but I hated the filling mechanism. So I asked Brian Gray for his help, and he generously converted my excellent Tucky into an Edison Morgan. Later, I glued a door knob on the cap in order to discern the cap from the barrel easily. It also works as a roll-stop. Many thanks to Brian Gray!

    Now that's a cool conversion.

I'm not familiar with Edison pen models, is the Morgan about the same size as a Tuckaway?
It looks longer in the photo.

Love the door knob. Where would you get something like that?

    Interesting conversion, penwash.
    I'm a Tuckaway collector, and I'm generally a purist
However, if your mod is reversible, I think it is great.

    Hi Greg,
The conversion is not reversible, unfortunately.
I respect the perspective of those who are on the "purist" side, so that's why I am careful to acknowledge that this conversion may not appeal to everyone.
But it does make the pen so much more enjoyable to use for me.

How many Tuckies do you have in your collection? Have you ever shown us a group shot?

Lisa, I'm so glad you saw this thread and shared that pen. I can remember when you first showed it back on FPN, and I've always thought about converting one particular Tuckie this way.

BTW, folks: Ethernautrix was the person who got me originally hooked on the Tuckaway pen. I've gone through rehab and it is no longer an issue, but for a while there...

    Will,
This is an older photo, but shows most of the Tuckaways I've managed to collect.
There are a few duplicates in here, and I have several duplicates not shown, mostly pens with 14k trim.

    Best Regards, greg

The Morgan is a more standard length, definitely not a Tucky size.

The door knob was a part of an earring. I bought the pair about ten years ago from a LiveJournal friend who had an Etsy shop. I imagine you could find such things at bead shops or in arts and crafts stores in the jewelry crafts section.

I love Tuckies, but I don't like the filling systems. (Sad face.) If only they were c/c. Go ahead, throw the tomatoes. I can cook them into a nice marinara sauce.

I'll get some of those tomatoes too, I'm sure.

Which brings us back to my conversion

Guess what, I have resuscitated another Sheaffer vac-filler.
This time a skinny but long Balance that came to me as parts (literally).

Which is a good thing because the nib that came with it is quite wonderful.
