I'll have to get them down and take some proper photos and identify each. Correction about the Zemax. I'd sent that to Italy for repair, and on return by registered mail, it disappeared forever and registration of the parcel was useless. I haven't seen another since.

penwash, ray celluloid has a certain pattern to it that, in my eye, is readily distinguished from other deco chevron patterns. The ray celluloid comes in different colors such as silver, copper, emerald and blue, and even different sizes, but they all have that common pattern. I've yet to research the source(s).

Christof, of course you are to thank for one of these from our vintage pen partnership purchases. By the way, I think I recognize the big red pencil on the right in your mini collection!

And another.

I'm a nib guy, and the old color-coded Waterman nib mini-collection is great to have and use. Here it is in all the available color nibs offered in the No. 7 jet-black series that replaced the ripples. Waterman had dropped the black nib after the ripple as far as I've been able to determine, but I have a black-coded barrel ready to accept the nib if one crosses my path.

Beautiful pens, didn't even know about that model. I always thought the color-coded nibs simply were with the ripples. Funny: insomnia kept me online last night, and I saw a white plugged pen at Maricio Aguilar's site. Not a white nib, of course...

Another mini collection. Little modern Japanese jewels - the under-rated Prera. Again, nothing swanky or valuable but I love these pens. Beautifully made, great nibs, solid click-on caps - and each for around £20, or less. I even managed to find a few of the 2010 Japan-only release; the Iro demonstrators, with solid colour end trims. Plus the 3 L.E. Oeste Stationery Group tinted demonstrators.

I've never heard about LUS pens. Would you tell us a bit more about these pens and what attracted you to collect them?

It looks like you need the lime green one, unless you are writing with it.

I've been fascinated with those (the Giubileo 53 in particular) since they were feature in some italian pen magazine a few years back...but gave up on trying to find more information on them. Aren't they seriously rare? You should do a writeup--I think we'd all love to know more!

I've never heard about LUS pens. Would you tell us a bit more about these pens and what attracted you to collect them?

How do any of us fall down the rabbit hole? I read about LUS pens a couple of years ago and was intrigued. Coincidentally, Mrs Catbert then acquired a really nice example, and I’ve been trying ever since to find its equal. I enjoy the combination of sleek mid-century style with something a little more technical.

LUS stands for ‘Legnani Umberto, Saronno’. Signor Legnani and his wife Giuseppina Carnelli started making steel nibs in Saronno in 1928.

The LUS Giubileo 53 fountain pen, the focus of my mini collection, was named for the 25th anniversary of LUS in 1953. The nib can be adjusted from firm (retracted) to semi-flex (extended) by twisting either the whole barrel or a knob at the end of the barrel, depending on the model.

The photo in my previous post showed (from top to bottom) a couple of lower-end Giubileos with steel nibs and three variants of the 53 with gold nibs - the best (the 53A) being Mrs Catbert’s.

I’m working on a longer appreciation of these pens, which I’ll post separately.

I don’t know about rare. Certainly it's not a brand that gets mentioned much. My accumulation is mostly user-grade stuff that comes up occasionally. Mrs Catbert’s 53A might be more uncommon.

As noted above, I’m working on a longer appreciation. Soon.
