    Default mini collections...

On fountainpenboard, there is a funny thread were members show pictures of small selections of their collections. It's called: "mini collections". I really like this thread and wish to start a similar one on FPG because...

I love to collect small selections of matching pens, building kind of a mini collection. Sometimes I first write a list, sometimes I have a picture in mind which I sketch quickly instead of written notes.

In march this year, I started with three pens and this sketch:

Seven months (and $xxxx.xx) later, the mini collection is complete:

Okay, to warm up I will post a picture of another mini-collection:

The Parker "51" Aerometric is one of my all time favourites and I always wanted to have one example of each color.
I really waited a long time for the last color - Plum - of course. I was tempted to buy one several times but at last, believe ot or not, I found one in a thrift shop for $20!

Pen collecting is fun, isn't it?

Okay, I've taken my camera out this morning and broken into my storage chest to get some of my mini-collections out. First, Kaweco Sport Art fountain pens, not quite a complete collection yet. I really love the way the classic octagonal pocket pen becomes a little jewel with the wonderful acrylic that's used.

In a completely different style, though also German, the Lamy 2000. I have three FPs of different vintages in black macrolon, the regular stainless and the stainless special edition, rollerball, ballpoints makrolon, taxus and blackwood, and a mechanical pencil. There's not much room left in the box...

Another mini-collection I'm very fond of, my Merlins - mainly the Merlin 33, but also Perfect, Elegant, and the little piston-filler (which I seem to remember is Triumph). All found on ebay, through the years. Still waiting for the 'coconut macaroon' one to show up.

Off to France, and a collection of Waterman Lady Elsa, Agathe, and Patricia pens. I adore these - the Elsa made in old galalith stock, particularly. They're a 1970s/80s bow to the early Waterman pens, and I think carry off the historic reference very nicely. With them is a Jean-Pierre Lepine mini pen, the Attila (small but powerful) in a chatoyant acrylic.

And finally - a box of Osmias and Rotrings. Spot the Osmi-brook Frankenpen that started it all! Most of these acquired in the wild in various states of decrepitude, and awaiting repair.

Hope this helps to get the ball rolling, though these little accumulations are nothing compared to a full set of P51 aerometrics. (Oh, I wish, I wish! I just keep finding black and grey!)

Here is another one of mines. Waterman's 52V in all possible HR colors.

This is al long term project and it took me probably 10 years to find them all. I decided to NOT inlcude the 452 1/2V overlay pens because they are shorter than the regular 52V. Instead I have a quite scarce french made 52V with rolled gold overlay and I believe there was a smiliar one in solid silver and most certainly in solid gold as well. The hunt goes on...

The BCHR with the wide engraved cap band.
I didn't needed that one because I already had a plain BHR and another chased on. But the price was good an I like the huge variety in which these came.

    You can say that again!
I am amazed at how good some people are with collecting things.
Some think that it's just about money and patience, but no, it takes persistence, and the ability to keep track of things for the long haul.

    And luck, of course

Claudio on FPN tried to sell one.....for $600! (The only pen I was interested in from his lot.)
I made him a fair offer but never got an answer.

Greg, that array of Bantams is nothing short of awesome! I want you to know that I have never forgotten your generosity 2 years ago in LA, where you gifted me one while I was trying to source nibs and parts. I've only got four, some in pretty rough shape, but I look fondly on them. Thank you for sharing this great photo (well, all of them)!

Here comes a totally fresh picture of my Pelikan 100N/101N mini-collection:

The pens on the left are after war time and the ones on the right are pre war time. The two black with broad capband are not identical although not visible on the picture. One is from pre 1949 with steped section and the other is from post 1949 with plain section.

Ouch. Even though I insisted on only adding examples with 18k nibs to my collection (versus the plated nibbed version you can also find,) I never paid even half of that for any of mine. Outrageous pricing.

A mini collection of P45s. Nothing swanky, rare or valuable, but they're a lot of fun.
