    Default 2017 Winter Ink Collection

Inspired by migo984, I have selected ten inks to use during the winter season:

Beautiful! Love that R&K Smaragdgrun. I have a bottle sitting in my cabinet that I've been meaning to try. Looks great!

I'm very new to the FP world. I have been looking at the Diamine Ancient Copper at Goulet's. Your sample seems to be darker. What is the cause of the difference?

There are a whole host of reasons it might appear different

Obviously there is the question of whether the photo is 'accurate'. This can be affected somewhat by the camera, but more especially by the lighting, and the tone of the lighting (sunny versus cloudy day, different types of artificial light). In this case you should note that my photo is not evenly lit, so it gets darker from left to right. It was also taken under artificial light that is supposed to be comparable to daylight, but isn't quite.

Another source of variation could be the pen used. Nib width and the wetness of the line produced can have a huge impact on the colour you see.

However, here is a shot of two of these inks from several weeks ago, using the exact same pens:

The Ancient Copper is quite a lot lighter in this photo, the Aqua Blue not so much. What I think must have happened is that the ink has gone darker having been left in the pen unused for a few weeks (I've been busily using up autumnal reds and oranges and berry tones). I have heard of this happening. I think the Turquoise and Blue Velvet are also darker than usual. I guess I'll find out whether all the ink in these pens has gone darker, or whether it is just the ink sat in the feed. For reference, these pens were not exposed to much to light while "resting", mostly they've been in a pen case in a desk drawer.

I find many inks go darker after sitting in pens for weeks, sometimes they even go darker after sitting in a pen for a couple of days. Goulet's Pens also show a swabbed image from a cotton bud, so that would always look lighter than anything written with a fountain pen.

Thanks so much for your replies. I'm really new and trying to pick up some of the nuances. Cheers
