I wonder how Pacific Pens came up with the "safety" angle?

If it didn't grant you a laugh, there's nothing I can do to change that. I tend to get a kick out of extreme-yet-harmless ignorance, although this case seems to be a bit more complicated. At least you can still take it in the British sense of "strange."

For what it is worth, I have handled (and repaired) a Waterman Safety in the Silver Ray material.

Really? Fascinating! I'd love to know more if there's more known.

Will you share any photos of it?

I have none. It was at a pen show a few years ago. I can ask if the owner still has it at the LA show.

Isn't it called a safety pen because Waterman advertised the screw on cap meant ink would not leak however the pen was carried, (which could happen with a slip cap pen) which was how the original "safety" name originated?

Ironically the cap is missing here, which makes these parts highly dangerous!

I think the idea of screw-cap pens being 'saftey' pens was out of fashion by the 1930s...it was simply expected.
