    Okay, since we now branch into talking about our children's musical inclinations, I am a proud dad of an 8th grader who just got picked via a blind audition for Region Honor Orchestra playing the violin.

    She competed with about 400 student violinists from 4 neighboring towns and was the only violinist picked from her Middle School.

    That is seriously impressive. I've always had respect for kids that land top spots in bands when they play common instruments....that sounds bad. What I mean is that when when they play instruments that a lot of other kids pick up, they have fierce competition. There. Better.

    There was a time when the better question was what didn't I play? In high school I played: trumpet, bassoon, guitar, bells, cymbals, french horn, and barry sax. It was more of a, "here, figure out how to play this to not sound terrible" more than it was any serious venture. I did play bassoon for many years in many different bands. Being one of 4 in a region meant auditions were more or less guaranteed.

    Here's one from a couple years ago: a Mark Berry triangle (yes, shades of the Geico commercial) that I used in Prokofiev's Symphony #5, on stage in Carnegie Hall, 2013:

    "When Men differ in Opinion, both Sides ought equally to have the Advantage of being heard by the Publick;
    and that when Truth and Error have fair Play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter."

    ~ Benjamin Franklin
