I think it behooves us all to be open-minded, to the degree that we can. After all, there is this:

... and then there is this:

At some point it is pretty hard to say this one is the better way, this one is more correct, etc. As long as no one is being fooled by something proported to be original when it isn't, when people are well aware that one is looking at a modded object and not a true restoration, people will follow their muse. As long as we don't lose a valued object in the process of hybridization and Frankensteining, I don't see much harm. Our respective areas of interest are all still safe.

That said, I'd urge Will to be a little less opaque with references to pen knowledge, history, and lore as seen in the Hemingway semi-mention. Not all of the audience will be aware of such an iconic pen, and it might be good to have at least a little mention somewhere.

Are they yours? That's a lovely collection.

Actually is that a photo behind them? Can't tell on my tablet. I presumed it was a cabinet type thing with a glass lid.

I like both the cross over pens!

I didn't want to give it away, but no, not a tray of pens (I wish!). The background is a page from Andy Lambreau's great book "Fountain Pens of the World". Obviously showing similar models, though, hmmm, he doesn't have any like mine...

Yeah, I think they're cute that way, but fortunately the least permanent mod you can make!

Man, I blame it squarely on my weird sense of humor...

Actually, I truly thought that everyone in *this* forum would immediately see through my references.

I don't know Carl, the Orange cap on black body just doesn't have the same effect on me as the other way.

    What do you think?

Man, I am so with you, hence my comment. I *always* f*** up because I'm laughing while I'm typing, and only realize later that maybe it was only me that would get the reference. Yeah, here might have been different, but we've had a lot of new recruits lately. I seriously imagine not many at reddit would catch the MB bit. And it was just a suggestion, follow your own path, etc...

Black cap on orange body is better than orange cap on black body. Having said that I like both.

However I feel the need to see both in real life, I'll PM my address to you and Jon......

Bear in mind that even with recent editions, this pen (below, and not my photo) is still in my top three pens. I find the Hemingwhale far too bloated a pen for my hands, and even my aesthetic.

I've never seen either in the flesh so I couldn't really judge size but price wise I bet there's a world of difference!

    I do like the aesthetic.

This article may go a fair way to answering some of your questions. Direct comparison.

The Parker Duofold is my first black cap orange body pen. I've held the MB Hemingway in real life, one of the folks at the Pen Club has one and I wrote with it. It's a hefty pen, but I like it. To me, it's in my "One day, perhaps" category.

The Sailor is nice too, btw.

I'm intrigued. I've never had a red Duofold. I'll be going to the Long Island Pen Show in a few weeks, and inevitably Mike Bloom will have way too many vintage red Duofolds for sale on his tables. This is tempting, but I don't think Mike will take kindly to me swapping his caps around, and I'd probably have to buy a red and a black when I found a pair with threads that work well together.

Perhaps the Sailor is the answer, but only 88 ever made? Come to think of it, I like black pens.

Fred, another way is to buy one red that is nice and restored, then ask around at the Pen Show for a black cap part. I'm sure from among all the vendors there you can find *one* nice Duofold black cap (just the cap, you don't even need the clip or the screw top) that matches the red one.

Then at home, just install the top of the cap and the clip on whichever color you feel like using that day.

Me too. On the upside, there are no Duofolds in this country for sale so no temptation, and buying from overseas is a crapshoot,
