Default New Tomoe River Notebooks on Kickstarter

Pardon me if this is a repost; I hadn't seen it talked about. Wanted to make sure paper lovers knew about the Kickstarter project offering 500-pg Tomoe River notebooks (plain, lined, dot-grid options), along with a project-specific exclusive ink. Check out https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...?ref=user_menu

As a complete ink fanatic, I love the way TR paper shows off the best qualities in any ink, and this promises to use the slightly heavier 68 gsm version of it. Can't wait to get mine!

This is a bit of a bump for the project - it's not just a good deal on a sweet TR journal, but the backstory on the project is heart-warmingly worth supporting. At least give it a look!

I'm really not trying to be crass so please don't take it as such.

Besides the high page count what's makes this any better than the numerous other notepads out on the market?

    1. I can't tell from your comment if you are familiar with Tomoe River paper, and the writing experience. That is one difference. (I note that you don't say "numerous other Tomoe River notepads")
    2. Then, even when factoring in other journals that use this paper (such as Nanami Writer), there is the page count, which is significant.
    3. Following on that, the price is reasonable for a large number of pages.
    4. And then, yeah, the basic impetus for the project. One can do a nice thing and get a very nice journal in return.

That's where I would start with my response.

Desperately interested but as a non-European friendly kickstarter (through no fault of the people involved, I appreciate that would be a lot of work) it would be nearly 100GBP for two journals.

Damn you import VAT! And double damn you Royal Mail handling charge!

Good luck to the originators, a lovely memorial to their son.

Just wanted to say that this is my project thank you to everyone for the kind words! Very excited to bring this notebook into the world, I've always been a huge fan of tomoe paper . And it looks like we are coming up on our stretch goal for ivory colored paper!

@Call_me_Tom, Jon is totally right, the tomoe writing experience is excellent! There are many other notebooks, but the tomoe market isn't overly saturated especially with the features available on Hippo Noto, back pocket, closure, colors, etc. Even if you don't back the project, if you haven't I would recommend trying some tomoe paper

A great pity this is limited to US friends. Where does it mention this is a memorial to their son?

In the very second paragraph on the KickStarter site:

    What's in a name?

The name Hippo Noto was largely inspired by our son who passed away too soon. Hippos were his thing, and now he is our hippo in the sky. We wanted to create a large, hippo sized notebook, and the name seemed fitting. Noto means "notes" in Japanese, which is where the Tomoe paper is imported from. We hope you enjoy taking hippo notes!

It isn't limited to the US. Shipping to Europe is $20.

Totally IN! There's even still time to get the early backer prices.

For the two notebooks I wanted, shipping is $30. I know shipping is costly and I am not questioning or judging the project creator, but $50 (excluding import costs, VAT etc) makes this very difficult to justify for me.

I hope I will get a chance to buy one in the future, the notebooks look really great.

I'm not sure if this is against the rules but being retired US military I have friends in the U.K. Canada and Australia and have purchased items locally and mailed it to them bypassing any outrageous taxes, import fees and taking advantage at times of a weaker USD.

They weren't anything major, I don't remember anything being more than a few $100. Shipping was slow as a snail though.

What is the backstory of the project, please? I have seen nothing other than a fountainpen, and ink lover, willing to make a notebook. Where is the heart-warminly story?
