    Default Dip Pens

Although I write with fountain pens (and have lots of fountain pens), I primarily write with a dip pen. It's even more fun and just as fast for me. I've got quite a few lovely antique dip pen holders. Here's a picture of one of my favorites.

Are there other dip pen writers here?

I have one cheap holder and a couple of nibs that I got in a calligraphy learning kit. My 11 year old daughter confiscated it.

Hmmmm, I wonder if that's because at 11 they send kids off to Hogwarts.

Used to, but. Very out of practice.

What a holder! WHERE do you find these cool things?
My other pen is a Montblanc.

And my other blog is a tumblr!

I've used dip pens in the past (in fact, bought a set from you!) and I enjoy them on a different level. I tend to use them with inks that are more suited to them, such as India, or Acrylic type, their performance with these inks is much better than trying to use fountain pen ink. I tried using them for ink sample testing, now I just use my ...er... less expensive fountain pens to test ink samples.

Some fifteen years ago I wrote a lot with dip pens. Then the character of writing changed, which together with the lack of good nibs and good paper made me to put dip pens away. Last year I've tried to pick it up again and was displeased by almost complete loss of skills. Mostly I forgot how to slow down and not surprisingly ascenders are killing me.

Maybe with different nibs, different inks and paper...

That's a beautiful pen. What bone was it carved out of? Any chance we might see more of your dip pen collection?

Here are the dip pens cluttering my desk this afternoon. You can see that the top one is really an early 20th century fountain pen but I'm using it as a dip pen holder. On the wooden Niagra Falls (slowly I turn, step by step, inch by inch) dip pen I've wrapped thread over the metal ferrule to make it more comfortable to write with and I've done the same using leather on the bottom one.

JBB I got some dip nibs and a bolder from you months ago... But I can't get the ink to STICK on the nib and so writing more than half a character doesn't happen.

Where can I get some pretty ink that will work with a dip pen and what do you suggest for a PRETTY ink for such a newb?

I'm really never sure whether my dip pens are bone, horn or ivory. I know for sure that the claw one is not plastic.

You have to prime the nib. Dip nibs come with a coating to protect them from rust. I use a flame, others use lemon juice.. It's a wax type coating
